Actress Ashley Judd has sued Harvey Weinstein, alleging the disgraced former film executive made inflammatory statements about her that hurt her career, according to court documents obtained by CNN.

Judd’s suit alleges that Weinstein deterred director Peter Jackson, who oversaw the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and his producing partner Fran Walsh from working with Judd on the films, a move that not only “torpedoed” her opportunity to star in the Academy Award-winning franchise but also cost her additional work.

She claims to have met with Jackson and Walsh in or around 1998 to discuss two different roles in the film, but the pair “dropped their pursuit” of her for the project after Weinstein told them the studio had “a bad experience” working with Judd, according to the lawsuit.

“The pathetic reality, however, was that Weinstein was retaliating against Ms. Judd for rejecting his sexual demands approximately one year earlier, when he cornered her in a hotel room under the guise of discussing business,” the suit states.

Jackson first revealed Weinstein’s comments in an interview back in December 2017, months after Weinstein began facing a host of allegations.

To date, the allegations against Weinstein range from harassment to rape, include the stories of more than 80 women and span several decades.

Through a spokesperson, Weinstein, who co-founded Miramax and the Weinstein Company, has repeatedly denied “any allegations of non-consensual sex.”

A representative for Weinstein also denied the allegations that he smeared Judd’s name.

“The most basic investigation of the facts will reveal that Mr. Weinstein neither defamed Ms. Judd nor ever interfered with Ms. Judd’s career, and instead not only championed her work but also repeatedly approved her casting for two of his movies over the next decade,” said a statement from Weinstein’s attorney, obtained by CNN.

Judd starred in “Frida,” which was distributed by Miramax in 2002, and “Crossing Over,” which was distributed by The Weinstein Company, in 2009.

The statement from Weinstein’s attorney also claims he “fought for Ms. Judd as his first choice for the lead role in ‘Good Will Hunting’ and, in fact, arranged for Ms. Judd to fly to New York to be considered for the role.”

Actress Minnie Driver was eventually cast in the role.

“We look forward to a vigorous defense of these claims,” Weinstein’s statement added.

Peter Jackson: I was told Judd was a ‘nightmare’ to work with
Jackson first made statements indicating Weinstein had deterred him from working with Judd in a December interview with New Zealand news website Stuff.

“I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998,” Jackson told the site, referring to Judd and Mira Sorvino.

Judd and Sorvino were among the first women to come forward with allegations of sexual harassment against Weinstein back in October 2017.

Weinstein denied the allegations at the time.

“Mr. Weinstein has nothing but the utmost respect for Peter Jackson. However, as Mr. Jackson will probably remember, because Disney would not finance the ‘Lord of the Rings,’ Miramax lost the project and all casting was done by New Line,” a statement said.

Upon reports of Jackson’s remarks, Judd tweeted her recollection of the meeting with Jackson and Walsh.

“Peter & Fran had me in — showed me all the creative, the boards, costumes, everything. They asked which if the two roles I preferred, and then I abruptly never heard from [them] again,” she wrote in December. “I appreciate the truth coming out. Thank you, Peter.”

Sorvino also responded to Jackson’s comments, calling it “confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure.”

“Thank you Peter Jackson for being honest,” she tweeted. “I’m just heartsick.”

Judd is seeking monetary damages and restitution.

“No person — in whatever job, in whatever industry — should have to forfeit professional aspirations and the right to earn a living to the abusive whims of the powerful,” Judd’s suit says. “Ms. Judd brings this complaint to vindicate that principle, and to right the wrongs that Weinstein committed against her, among so many others.”

CNN has reached out to Judd’s representative for additional comment on this story.

Innuendo Issues: Sex in Movies

Sex in Movies

For those of you who have read my article regarding profanity, you’ll know that I take a dim view of immorality portrayed in movies, unless done for a clear artistic reason. To me, it seems like films today are inundated with vulgarities and subjects that are intended to embarrass or arouse the viewer. Sex in movies is a trend that won’t die. It’s come to where I’m uncomfortable viewing a new movie with others for fear of what we may see.

This issue recently came to my attention when I saw the trailer for the new John Cena movie, Blockers (2018), now in theaters. It was crass and tasteless and something I shouldn’t have wasted a minute-and-a-half on. While I have no intention of seeing it, I did hear quite an earful from a friend of mine and I’m appalled with how Hollywood plays fast and loose with its morals nowadays.

Sex in Movies

What happened to the times when sex was something only alluded to, never actually depicted? Why is sex no longer seen as too taboo to show on-screen? Why do we revel in these salacious matters instead of turning away in disgust?

What Does a Clear Artistic Reason Mean?

Let’s start by defining what a “clear artistic reason” is. This is when the issue gets tricky, because something clearly artistic to me could be completely vulgar to you. It’s mainly a relative term for someone to categorize a movie according to their own values. Here are the three primary criteria that I use:

#1: Does the innuendo or intercourse move the plot along?

A better way to ask that question is like this: if I took that scene out, would the movie still make sense? A good example of a movie not meeting this standard is the sex scene in Top Gun (1986). When I was younger (and still today), my family would skip over this particular scene. Later, I skimmed through it to see if I’d ever missed out on any of the plot. Turns out, the only thing I missed was Tom Cruise’s aggressive tongue — something I could have gone my entire life without seeing.

However, this wasn’t the case with the movie Dave (1993), in which there was a particular sex scene that we always skipped that I’ve just now realized filled in a major plot point; apparently I’d just glossed over this point as a kid. The need for sex scenes varies from movie to movie.

#2: Is it realistic?

No, I don’t mean if the sex was realistic. I mean was the situation realistic? Would these characters really have engaged in sex at the moment in that location, or was it just added because the movie “needed” a sex scene? My favorite example of how not to meet this criteria is the sex scene in Shoot ‘Em Up (2007). In the midst of harrowing circumstances, Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci decide to go to a hotel room and, instead of getting some much-needed rest, and decide to have sex. As if things weren’t unrealistic enough, gunmen come in and try to kill them. Owen, remaining coupled to his partner the whole time while she makes god-awful noises, kills all the assailants.

#3: Is it done purely for shock value or for a deeper reason?

This one gets a little harder to define, which is where individual opinion comes in. For example, I believe the sex scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) are purely erotica with little to no reason behind them other than to arouse its audience. However, I think that the sex scene (mainly alluded to) in Forrest Gump (1994) represents Forrest’s delayed loss of innocence, and thus has an artistic reason. Yet, I know there are many people who would disagree with me.

Why Does Hollywood Love Sex?

Simple answer: humans are animals at their very core.

Because of this, people buy tickets for movies they know will be sexually explicit. Look at Deadpool (2016). Despite the fact that everyone knew that movie would be raunchier than any previous Marvel film, they fully supported it anyway, making it a cinematic smash. And while it’s obvious no one went into the theater purely for the sex, they sure didn’t walk out or denounce it. If anything, they probably feel it only enhanced the movie’s rebellious atmosphere.

Like I’ve said before, if people continue to go to these types of movies and distribution companies make money, you’ll get more of this content rather than less of it. The fact that it offends some people doesn’t mean that they’ll stop making films with explicit sex scenes.

Is a Sex Scene Ever Necessary?

I know I may be in the minority in this, but I venture to say that no sex scene is ever truly necessary. You can always allude to it, but there’s never a reason to show so much of it other than to appeal to the lurid interests of the audience.

My question is: do movie directors realize that pornography exists? Do they realize that people aren’t going to pay for porn when they can get it for free online? So, why include it in movies, other than to create an awkward situation for everyone watching it? The sex scene is the most uncomfortable part in any movie, so why do such scenes keep getting included? They obviously don’t need to, so I shake my head when directors feel that adding a sex scene makes their movie better than a movie without one.

But…

But, I know my requests will fall on Hollywood’s deaf ears. So, I stick to my criteria and continue to shyly avert my eyes when the action gets too hot and heavy for my tastes. But beware: movies will only degrade further and further into promiscuity from here.

And Tom Cruise’s tongue will get more and more aggressive.

Big Brother Naija Day 75: The Rico Aftershocks!!!

The Rico Aftershocks!!!

Rico.3jpgAll Housemates except Cee-C admitted to missing Rico Swavey. Anto had noticed that his departure had affected some more than others, and wished him well. For Tobi, Rico had played safe and thought highly of Rico.

Tobi was the first to admit he missed him the most in the kitchen. Khloe had the hardest time since she missed having someone to talk to at nights, and had nobody to fight with when she was tipsy. In Miracle’s view, Rico’s humour was sorely missed but again he felt lucky to have learned a few dishes from him. For Alex, though Rico’s goofiness was missed, there hadn’t been any food fights since he left.

The biggest blow came from Cee-C, according to whom, people didn’t talk about Rico at all. Worse, despite everybody acknowledging Tobi and Miracle for stepping into Rico’s chef shoes, in Cee-C’s eyes, nobody had gone into the kitchen to cook for all. Nobody except Anto whom she praised for making burgers.  Perhaps Lolu’s analysis that many saw in Rico a big threat was proven right?

Mariah Carey Talks New Love, Why NYE Performance Was a ‘Chaotic Mess’

Celebrity Gists, international News, song

During a rare home visit, the superstar singer answers her critics and gives a glimpse into her creative process

In a rare interview, Mariah Carey discusses her new relationship, her New Year’s Eve performance and why she’s “incapable of being in the real world.”James Dimmock/ E! Entertainment

The first thing you expect to see when you walk through the security-access gate of Mariah Carey‘s sprawling rented estate in Beverly Hills, where she moved in just weeks ago, is something excessive. And there it is: two towering pillars of pink, magenta and metallic-colored balloons, swaying in the early afternoon breeze on either side of the main house’s entrance, a holdover two days out from Valentine’s Day. It’s not surprising, really – she loves to be festive. After all, she’s become the reigning queen of Christmas with her evergreen “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” and even celebrated the holiday a second time in January 2016, just a week after getting engaged to billionaire James Packer.

Fast-forward to now and Carey started off the year by clearing the cache. She broke off the engagement with Packer in October, and documented some of it on her audacious reality series Mariah’s World, where she connected with her current boyfriend, dancer/choreographer Bryan Tanaka. During Rolling Stone‘s February 16th visit, Tanaka is looming around the estate, pattering after his pup, a tongue-wagging four-year-old pitbull named Mila whom he quarters off in the pool area next to the two-story guest house where “Dem Babies” – codename for Carey’s five-year-old twins – are hanging out. It was just a week prior that Carey released her YG-assisted single “I Don’t,” a sort of musical purging of her ex, emphasized by a music video in which she burns the $250,000 dress that she planned to marry him while wearing.

It makes sense that she would want a fresh start, particularly in this secluded, overgrown Los Angeles home, complete with a tennis court and next-level jungle gym, that’s valued at $100,000 a month and features nine bedrooms and 10 bathrooms. But she’s clearing her mind and separating herself from the clutter, particularly the storm cloud that currently hovers over her career: a performance on New Year’s Eve that was widely acknowledged as disastrous, one where she sputtered through her hits “We Belong Together” and “Emotions,” which sent her on both a media and social media hiatus in the time since.

“I don’t even want to bring this up too much, but whatever, we’re obviously talking about it, the New Year’s Eve situation – that couldn’t be helped,” she says, talking to Rolling Stone inside her home. In person, she’s glamorous, her hoop earrings studded with glimmering diamonds, gold buttons accenting her black dress, a butterfly ring cozying up to her gleaming silver nail polish. She stares at you directly in the eyes the entire time she talks, except when she rolls her eyes at a question she doesn’t love, in classic Mimi form.

Her explanation for NYE today matches the statement she released shortly after the fiasco, to combat Dick Clark Production’s refutation that they ignored her request to fix a problem with her in-ear monitors prior to the show. “It’s just something where if I can’t explain it to the entire world, then they’re not going to understand it, because it’s not what they do. Just like I wouldn’t understand somebody who had a desk job and how to do that. I couldn’t. I literally am incapable of being in the real world and surviving.”

It’s a rare press day for Carey, her first in the near months since the clock ticked into 2017, and a day after she debuted “I Don’t” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! For the performance, she was singing without a backing track, her vocals mint; it was largely hailed as a triumphant return to form. Some even said that she “redeemed” herself, an admittedly condescending assessment that largely discounts her 18 Number One singles and earned accolades, like becoming the third-best-selling female artist in the U.S. behind Barbra Streisand and Madonna. She’s had decades and decades of stellar performances throughout her career – “Don’t add that many decades,” she says – and only a handful of public mishaps, none of which got nearly as much attention as the New Year’s Eve mishap.

So how does she deal with controversy in 2017? “I used to get upset by things,” she says. “This was out of my control, and had everything not been such a total chaotic mess, then I would have been able to make something happen. Even the dancers should have stopped dancing and helped me off the fucking stage. I’m sorry. It was a mess, and I blame everybody, and I blame myself for not leaving after rehearsal.”

Her focus turned to family, particularly cultivating her relationship with Tanaka. It seemed relatively fast that they started publicly cozying up following her split from Packer, but their friendship stems back to 2006, when he was a dancer for Carey on tour, and culminated in a widely circulated clip from Mariah’s Worldwhere he asks if she really wants to marry Packer in what many speculated was a scripted scene. Most recently, Carey posted an Instagram picture of them knee-to-knee in a bathtub on Valentine’s Day; she still considers their relationship mostly sealed off.

As it stands, Carey seems to be relishing her freedom as a musician to record at ease. “I Don’t” is a standalone single that reinterpolates and samples Donell Jones’ “Where I Wanna Be” in Carey tradition. She’s been ahead of the curve in that way – some of her best remixes mine from songs like “Pure Imagination” for “I Still Believe” and Ghost Town DJ’s “My Boo,” which she swept up for the remix to “H.A.T.E. U” and saw a resurgence last year thanks to the Running Man Challenge. “The thing is, right now, it is a trend, and a trend that I’m very familiar with, making songs go around working with different samples, that’s what I do. Doesn’t matter if you’re inspired by songs from the 1980s, 1990s.”

Carey has no plans to record the follow-up to 2014’s sorely underrated Me. I Am Mariah… the Elusive Chanteuse, though she’s hashed out “conceptual stuff” with DJ Khaled and Travis Scott in the studio. Instead, she says, she plans on recording singles when she isn’t on the road with Lionel Richie on theirupcoming joint tour. She’s particularly intent on making her home an actual home – it feels somewhat empty, a fireplace accented by a few pictures of her in a red skin suit on vacation with her twins, and a bare hallway leading to where she’s spending the day doing interviews. “People who have an opinion about me, some of them feel like, ‘Oh, she’s not entitled to the same rules as someone else,'” she says. “I try my hardest.”

Mariah Carey said she was “mortified” by her disastrous New Year’s Eve performance, which was marred by technical difficulties. Watch here.

tubabaInnocent ‘2baba’ Idibia on Tuesday indicated his interest in vying for political office.

Speaking with journalists in Lagos, Idibia said he is keen on affecting lives positively and would soon pick up the challenge of a political position.

He, however, failed to say what office he was eyeing or what political platform he would pitch his tent with.

“Politics affects everything I do,” he said. “So, I am definitely going to be interested in politics. I will soon participate as a contestant and speak the truth at all times.

“I hope and pray that good men will rise up and make a difference in this country because we need more patriotic people in all aspects of life.”

The Benue-born artiste decried the incessant farmers/herdsmen clashes that have negatively impacted his state.

“There is so much we’ve been saying about this crisis, but nothing much has come the way of the victims,” he said.

“We just need more people to support and join hands to continue extending relief materials to affected people. This is the most important thing we can now do; bring succour to the victims.

“I feel terrible not because it also happened in Benue State, where I hail from, but because it is also happening almost throughout the federation. “It does not have to happen to someone you know before you speak up about it.”

In January 2017, 2baba announced a nationwide protest against the policies of the federal government.

After coming under intense pressure to shelve the demonstration, 2baba announced the cancellation.

He had said: “It has become clear that the One Voice protest scheduled to hold in Lagos and Abuja is under serious threat of hijack by those whose interest do not align with our ideals.

“The point I intend making is not worth the life of any Nigerian. It is motivated by the need to demand a better deal for the ordinary Nigerian.”
