Pre-season

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken about his players ahead of pre-season, and noted that Sadio Mane and Mo Salah will work their way into the season.

He noted that the Liverpool players who have been at the World Cup have of course got holidays and time off before they’re expected to come back to the club, ready for next season, after recharging their batteries and becoming ready for the fight ahead next season.

“That’s the start for them,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com.

“They had their holiday and then they’ll come with us to the USA. They only had three weeks’ holiday so it means they didn’t lose too much.

“We have to see how they present and then we’ll see if they can play in the games. They will be there.

“And then the last group [of World Cup players] comes much later.”

New objectives

Ahead of the new season, Liverpool will certainly have high objectives, with the Champions League final loss something they want to build on this season and go one step further, along with targeting the Premier League as well.

Mo Salah himself had a stunning season last time out, and will want to personally build on his achievements, with his goal tally something everyone is curious to see if it can be repeated and may happen again – something Liverpool fans will be hoping for and certainly something the player expects.

Klopp need to Fix Salah before Champions League Final

News, sports

Former Tottenham midfielder and current Match of the Day pundit Jermain Jenas last night revealed his opinion that Liverpool need Mohamed Salah to rediscover his form quickly, following the Egyptian’s disappointing showing versus Chelsea yesterday evening.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at Stamford Bridge, in a crucial fixture in the race for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham’s shock loss to West Brom on Saturday afternoon meant that Chelsea would close the gap on their London rivals to just 2 points with a win, while such a result would also leave Liverpool just a solitary point clear of Spurs.

1-0

The early exchanges in London yesterday saw Liverpool well on top, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino both going close for the Reds over the course of the opening half-hour.

However, it was Chelsea who opened the scoring, through January signing Olivier Giroud, after the Frenchman did brilliantly to nod home a dinked cross from Victor Moses with 32 minutes on the clock.

Result

And that was all she wrote in terms of goalscoring at the Bridge, with an uncharacteristically quiet second 45 from Liverpool’s attacking stars having eventually seen Chelsea emerge with a deserved, and potentially crucial 1-0 win.

Concerning

Of the Reds’ attacking trio, Sadio Mane looked the most lively throughout proceedings at Stamford Bridge, with Mohamed Salah having looked some way short of his best once again.

The African wide-man, who has of course enjoyed a historic season to this point, has struggled to make any real impact in Liverpool’s last 3 fixtures, with large sections of the club’s fans having expressed their concerns with the form and fitness of their side’s star man following yesterday’s defeat.

And Jermain Jenas echoed these concerns when analysing the performance of Salah versus Chelsea on Match of the Day last night, with the former English international having explained:

‘When they did get into good positions around the box, Salah had one of the worst games I think he has had in a Liverpool shirt.’

‘He is entitled to have a bad game given the season he has had, but Liverpool need to fix this quickly because they have got two of the most important games of their whole season coming up.’

MO SALAH faces an anxious wait to see if he could be banned from Liverpool’s final two Prem games.

And that may give Spurs ace Harry Kane an extra boost as he seeks to haul back Salah’s five-goal lead in the race for the Golden Boot.

FA disciplinary beaks are expected to refer Salah’s clash with Stoke’s Bruno Martins Indi during Saturday’s goalless draw at Anfield to the three-man panel of ex-referees to rule if it was a red card offence.

The FA have been alerted to social media clips of the incident, in which the Egyptian superstar appears to flail a balled hand at Stoke’s Dutch defender near the half-way line.

Referee Andre Marriner did not spot the incident, which took place just before half-time.

Under FA rules, potential violent conduct incidents missed by the officials are referred to the panel of former whistlers, who must unanimously agree it was a sending off.

Last week, West Brom’s Ahmed Hegazi avoided action when the three former refs – who view all referred incident separately – failed to agree he should have received a red card for an alleged punch on Liverpool’s Danny Ings.

Salah will discover in the next 24 hours if he faces a violent conduct charge, which would bring with it an automatic three-game ban ruling him out of the rest of the domestic campaign and the first game of next term.

Mohamed Salah has left the door open to a move to Real Madrid – but insists he is happy at Liverpool for now.

Salah has been in stunning form for Liverpool since signing from Roma in the summer.

And his goals have put Real Madrid on alert with Zinedine Zidane publicly praising him and the Egypt boss claiming he is destined to play at the Bernabeu.

The Egypt star has scored 27 goals already – including 21 in the league – for the Reds and while he says he’s happy at Anfield he was coy when asked about a move to Spain.

“At the moment I am here,” he told Spanish publication Marca.

“I want to concentrate on my team and finish the season very well.”
And when asked about the comments from his national team boss Hector Cuper he refused to distance himself from them.

He said: ”Why do you think they say these things? I don’t have much to say about that. If I have to say something, I’ll say I’m happy at Liverpool.”

Salah has been revelation since joining Liverpool after a poor spell with Chelsea previously.

But he insists he always believed in himself and knew he could score goals at this level.

He has become one of the top players in the Premier League and the buy of the summer.
“I’ve always scored goals wherever I’ve played, but this year I’m doing so a lot more… it’s not a surprise for me,” he said on his form.

“After arriving here the first time [Chelsea] was always in my head, and after playing in Rome, coming back here to England was great because I love the Premier League.

“Last year I had some good performances for Roma, but I arrived as a forward and started playing out wide.

“This year I’m scoring more goals. In any case I want to help the team to win titles or be in a good position in the league.

“I didn’t do well (with Chelsea) because I didn’t play many games. I was there for one year, but I only played during the first six months. After that, I hardly participated.

“I went to Fiorentina, scored goals, then in Rome I played very well and returned to England. But it’s not a matter of succeeding or not.”

Jose Mourinho Blames Chelsea For Selling Liverpool Star Mohamed Salah – And Says The Blues Lied About His Departure

Mo Salah was sold by Chelsea after a failed two-year spell at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has laid the blame squarely at Chelsea’s door for selling Mo Salah in 2016.

The Egyptian star left Stamford Bridge under Mourinho’s reign after a failed two-year spell.

But the Manchester United boss insists he didn’t make the decision to sell Salah, who has lit up Europe this season with 43 goals for Champions League chasing Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho said Chelsea are to blame for selling Mo Salah in 2016

Salah left Chelsea for Roma in 2016 before the Reds brought him for £40million last summer.

Mourinho told ESPN Brazil: “People say that I was the one that sold Salah and it is the opposite.

“I was the one that bought Salah. I was the one that told Chelsea to buy Salah.

“But he came as a young kid, physically he was not ready, mentally he was not ready, socially and culturally he was lost and everything was tough for him.

“We decided to put him on loan and he asked for that as well.

“Chelsea decided to sell him, OK?

Mo Salah has forced his way into Ballon d'Or contention with his stunning performances for Liverpool this season

“And when they say that I was the one that sold him it is a lie.

“I agreed to send him on loan, I thought it was necessary, I thought that Chelsea had wingers.

“Some of them are still there like Willian, [Eden] Hazard and all those players already in a different level.”

Mourinho added: “But effectively I did buy Salah, I didn’t sell Salah, but it doesn’t matter.

“What matters is that he is a fantastic player, and I am really happy for everything that is happening for him and especially because he scores against everyone and he didn’t score against us in two games.”

Liverpool and Stoke City have very different priorities heading into the final weeks of the 2017-18 season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have just about wrapped up a top-four finish in the Premier League and are unlikely to be fully focussed on Saturday’s home clash against the Potters given they have the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Roma just four days later.

Stoke, meanwhile, are fighting for their lives in the relegation battle and must win at Anfield given they are four points from safety.

Saturday’s clash on Merseyside should then be an intriguing contest. Read on for a preview of the contest, along with scheduling and viewing information.

Liverpool were devastating as they routed Roma 5-2 in their semi-final first leg on Tuesday.

Per Squawka, Mo Salah netted twice to continue his incredible 2017-18 season as the Reds put one foot in the final:

Were Stoke to come up against a Liverpool side in that kind of form on Saturday they would be blown away.

However, it seems likely Klopp will rest some of his key players so they are ready for the return leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

Given the circumstances, it also seems unlikely Liverpool will be as motivated to perform as they were against Roma.

The Anfield outfit have little left to play for in the English top flight this season, while Stoke can only afford a victory.

The problem for Paul Lambert’s side, though, is they are winless in 11 Premier League games.

They need to remember how to win, and fast.

It is not guaranteed that Klopp will rest his key front men for the Stoke clash, although he will have no option to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was stretchered off against Roma, per football broadcaster Melissa Reddy:

Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have the ability to seal the three points with early goals should they start, after which they could then be substituted.

But there is also the chance that one of them could pick up an injury.

Liverpool’s top-four spot is not guaranteed, but it is also not in any immediate danger.

It will be a balancing act for Klopp to decide what team he puts out, as even a second string XI could likely claim all three points against an out-of-form Stoke.

But the Potters are in a brutal relegation scrap and that means they will pose Liverpool some danger, as West Bromwich Albion did last time out in claiming a 2-2 draw against the Reds.

Steven Gerrard has covered Mo Salah in praise for another decisive performance for Liverpool.

The Egyptian star has taken his seasonal goal tally to 43 goals in 47 games in all competitions with a two-goal, two-assist performance against former club Roma.

While the ex-Giallorossi refused to celebrate against the Lupa, he has put them on the brink of Champions League elimination. According to Steven Gerrard, however, the real debate is a different one: to the former Anfield mainstay, Salah is the best player in the world at the moment.

“It’s difficult to compare him to your Ronaldo’s and Messi’s because they’ve done it for so long and consistently year in year out,” he said on BT Sport, where he is a pundit.

“But without a shadow of a doubt he’s the best player on the planet right now.”

“Wow. I’m running out of words really.

“Two exquisite finishes. The first one, the accuracy in terms of knocking the stanchion off.

“And the second one, the double run at first to kid Juan Jesus the left centre-back.

“And then to get in and sit the keeper down with the calmness.”

MO SALAH shared a touching hug with his former Roma team-mates before he went on to put them to the sword in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Liverpool winger, 25, has netted 43 goals in all competitions this season and continued a run of form that is simply out of this world.

But part of what makes him such a special player is his humble nature and the fact that he does not forget old friends.

And there was no chance he would forget his pals at former club Roma, as he embraced Radja Nainggolan and what appears to be one of Roma’s directors.

All the niceties ended there though, as Salah ran riot against his former team-mates, cutting in from the left after 36 minutes to bend an effort off the far post and inside for a stunning goal.

He then scored another, racing on to a through ball to dink the ball over Giallorossi keeper Alisson as it rolled over the line for 2-0.

In the second half it did not get any easier for the former Chelsea and Fiorentina man, as he turned supplier for goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

The Italian media have this morning reacted with surprise that Roma sold Salah for so cheap after his display.

DAVE KIDD As for Mo Salah, no Egyptian has screwed the Romans like that since Cleopatra

Sporting director Monchi admitted he had to flog the Egyptian for £34.4million, while the fee could eventually rise to £44.4m, but he was constrained by Financial Fair Play.

LIVERPOOL NEWS

“It’s true, I gave up Salah, but forced by Uefa constraints.

“Last year we were forced to sell by June 30th and if we had not done it that day we would not be in the Champions League semi-finals.

“Our accounts were under strict control from Uefa and when I arriived there was an offer of [£26m], then with the bonuses it went up to [£44m].”
