Ravens win AFC North, Eagles, Colts get wild cards

sports

By BARRY WILNER

Week 13

The playoff chase went down to the final minutes of the season Sunday, when Baltimore squeezed in as AFC North winner, and defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia got some help to secure an NFC wild card.

Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt

That left Pittsburgh and Minnesota out.

Kansas City (12-4) grabbed the AFC’s top seed, followed by New England (11-5), Houston (11-5) and Baltimore (10-6). The Chargers (12-4) own the first wild card and will play at the Ravens next Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. The Colts (10-6) romped past the Titans 33-17 at Tennessee and have the other wild card. They travel to Houston on Saturday afternoon.

DeAndre Hopkins, Myles Jack

The Saints (13-3) have the top seed in the NFC, and the Rams (12-4) got the No. 2 spot when they beat San Francisco. Chicago (12-4), whose win at Minnesota knocked out the Vikings and put the Eagles into the postseason, is seeded third and gets Philadelphia (9-7) next Sunday at 4:40 p.m.

Dallas (10-6) is the fourth seed and will play Seattle (10-6) on Saturday night.

C.J. Mosley intercepted a fourth-down pass by Baker Mayfield to preserve the Ravens’ 26-24 win as Baltimore rushed for a season-best 296 yards. A year ago, Baltimore missed the playoffs by losing its finale at home to the Bengals, who rallied with a last-minute touchdown.

“If you want to write a book about this season, probably no one would believe it,” coach John Harbaugh said.

Steelers players remained on the field after they edged Cincinnati 16-13 and watched the drama from Baltimore on the videoboard. But their archrival Browns couldn’t help them against the equally hated Ravens, and Pittsburgh (9-6-1) is out.

“It just sucks,” Steelers guard David DeCastro said. “How hard we work, how much effort we put in. To go from 7-2-1 to where we are now is heartbreaking.”

Nick Foles, who led the Eagles to the Super Bowl title over the Patriots in Minneapolis last February, guided them to a resounding 24-0 victory at Washington. Then the Bears helped out at Minnesota with a 24-10 win even though they had nothing to play for, being set as the NFC’s third seed.

“We’re not sneaking in. We’re here to do some damage,” Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins said.

Earlier, the Texans rallied from losing their first three games to win the AFC South and become the No 3 seed.

Houston easily handled Jacksonville 20-3 Sunday as Deshaun Watson threw for 234 yards and ran for a touchdown, and DeAndre Hopkins had 147 yards receiving.

The Texans finished last in the division in 2017. They and the Bears have done the worst-to-first turnaround this season, making it 15 of the past 16 seasons that has occurred in the league.

“It’s do or die now, so you’ve got to put everything on the line now,” Watson said. “Prepare harder than you did before and anything can happen at this point. The tournament is wide open and it’s my first playoff, so I’m just excited to get in and see how things go.”

New England, meanwhile, will get a week off in early January for the 13th time since 2001, most in the NFL during that span. The Patriots routed the Jets 38-3, and because they defeated Houston during the season, they get the bye.

“Eleven and five is nothing to be sad about,” Tom Brady said. “We fought pretty hard and put ourselves in good position.”

Seoul, May 14 (IANS) South Korean football coach, Shin Tae-yong, on Monday presented a preliminary list of 28 players for the 2018 Russian World Cup and explained that he hopes to announce a final squad of 23 players on June 3.

The roster has been increased to 28 as several players are still recovering from injuries and their current state doesn’t allow their presence in the final list to be confirmed, Efe news reported quoting Shin’s statement.

Although half of the list has players from the domestic league, the primary core of the group is made up of players from European clubs and with a lot of experience.

Set to headline the national team is Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-min.

Old faces like midfielders Koo Ja-Cheol (Augsburg), Ki Sung-yueng (Swansea City) and Lee Chung-yong (Crystal Palace) also feature on the list.

Although there are veterans over 30 years of age such as strikers Lee Keun-ho (Gangwon FC) or Kim Shin-wook (Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors), Shin seems to be betting on a face-lift to avoid a repeat of the team’s poor performance at the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Only nine players from the former world cup are back on the team, with the addition of new talents like Lee Seung-Woo (nicknamed “South Korean Messi”), who in 2018 debuted in the Serie A with the Hellas Verona FC after his transfer from Barcelona.

South Korea, which has been put in Group F with Mexico, Sweden and Germany opens against Sweden in Nizhny Novgorod on June 18 and will play with Mexico in Rostov on June 23 before closing the group matches in Kazan against Germany on June 27.

Brit fans heading to the World Cup in Russia told ‘be quiet as mice – or else’ — The Scottish Sun

News

Russian hooligans broke cover yesterday to warn England World Cup fans: “Be quiet as mice – or else.”

It came after British MPs said their political counterparts in Russia had praised their hooligans who attacked England fans at Euro 2016.

Yob generals said the recent collapse of relations between Vladimir Putin’s regime and the UK had made England followers the target of choice for Russia’s feared Ultra gangs.

And they warned insulting chants, drunkenness and even rowdy support for the Three Lions team could spark merciless violence.

Gay fans were also warned to keep a low profile and not to show affection in public.

The chilling threats came as MPs told British police in charge of travelling fan security they were being “terribly naive” about the risks to English supporters.

A Moscow-based hooligan ringleader known as Mordvin – who is on the list of thugs banned from the World Cup by Putin’s authorities said: “Any provocation from the English will be met with with force.

“If they dare to disrespect us they will be punished and we are warning them to behave.

“The authorities say they can control us but – make no mistake – if we are provoked in any way and there are no cops around we will hit them hard.

“I am talking about hitting them with our fists and whatever else we can reach with our hands if it comes to a battle

“The English must understand that they are guests in our country and if they behave in an aggressive way they will get an aggressive response.

“Ultras will react but English people are not popular here these days and ordinary Russians may join in if their fans insult us.”

Sun inquiries in Moscow yesterday established that known troublemakers on a list of Russians banned from matches had slipped through Russia 2018’s security dragnet.

Anton Bersenev – a 29-year-old Lokomotiv Moscow yob on the banned list – revealed he had still managed to obtain tickets for five games from a FIFA website.

And he fired off his own warning to England fans to keep a low profile.

Bersenev said: “If England fans treat locals in a hostile manner they can expect hostility in return.

“Most of Russians will tolerate English chanting because we are hospitable people – but we will not accept insults and trouble on the streets.

“Your fans should be aware of this for their own safety.”

House of Commons’ foreign affairs committee members warned cops this week not to underestimate threats to England fans amid rising tension over the Skripal nerve agent poisoning.

Labour’s Ian Austin said that Russian MPs had congratulated the hooligans who attacked England fans at Marseille at Euro 2016, leaving two in a coma and dozens injured.

Tory Bob Seely said he was concerned that “there is an undercurrent of significant violence, and we have seen some of that violence supported by the Russian state.”

He told police chiefs: “None of you is addressing the fact that there is an undercurrent of political support for extreme football violence.

“I don’t think it is going to happen but if things do turn nasty we will not have the power to protect those fans if there is organised violence against them.”

Far-right fan leader Alexander Shprygin – a pal of Putin – was caught up in claims that Russian authorities had secretly egged on their yobs in Marseille.

He was branded a rabble rouser after he waved a Russian flag and was pictured giving a Nazi salute next a topless girl when he was among 20 Russians expelled from France.

Igor Lebdev, the Russian parliament lawmaker who employs Shprygin, sparked further fury by telling yobs on Twitter after the Marseille bloodbath: “Well done lads – keep it up!”

Businessman Shprygin, 40, issued his own warning to England fans yesterday.

He told The Sun: “The English can do whatever they like as long as they don’t break Russian law and if they do anything inappropriate they should expect trouble.

“If they insult locals they are likely to get a harsh reaction.

“Moscow and the other host cities will have a lot of security but if anyone strays outside these secure places and gets drunk and causes trouble it could get very serious.

“Russia is proud of its traditions and our guests should respect their hosts as we will respect them.

“But we should not forget this is a major sporting event and our people are looking forward to it.”

Shprygin added that gay fans travelling to Russia for the soccer showpiece should also exercise caution.

He said: “If two men check into a hotel room together and are discrete they will get no more than a wry smile.

Andrés Iniesta & Xavi of Nigeria. Meet the 14 year old Lawal Suleiman Ayomide

The way he sees the game is different from everyone on the field, he doesn’t need to faint, dribble or out-muscle anyone. He just needs to touch the ball and the ball would run his errands gracefully. The beauty of having an intelligent player on your team is that, you have an edge. Just pray for your strikers to be at the right place at the right time and be willing to convert their chances

Sule featured for G12 academy (real academy) only 3 out of their team is likely to be above 20. The rest are in under 18. His team one 1- 0 and they are in round 32 of the Lagos FA Cup. Sule’s touches, pocket passes, ball control vision is out of here

Spain coach Lopetegui keeps preliminary 35-man World Cup list secret — Social News XYZ

Madrid, May 11 (IANS) Spain coach Julien Lopetegui will send a preliminary list of 35 players for the World Cup to FIFA on Monday, before reducing that to the definitive list of 23 after the end of the football season.

However, Lopetegui told Spanish sports paper Diario AS on Thursday that he would not make his first list public, reports Xinhua news agency.

“We are not going to make it public, because there are 12 players who are then not going to be in the final list. That is obviously going to be a hard moment for everyone: for the players and also for me and I would prefer that moment to be private,” explained Lopetegui.

Although he didn’t want to give any names, the Spain coach did give a couple of hints.

“It will be hard for someone who has not played in the qualification games for us to make the final squad, but there could be some players in the list of 35 players who were not in the qualifying stage.”

“We will decide on the final list close to the deadline, it is more or less defined, but there are still some doubts to clear up,” Lopetegui admitted.

Lopetegui takes Spain to Russia after they crashed out of the first stage in Brazil four years ago and following an underwhelming last-16 exit against Italy in the 2016 European Championship.

Following an impressive World Cup qualifying stage, Spain will be among the favourites this summer.

Juventus defender set to join Borussia Dortmund

News, sports

juve.jpgAccording to German outlet Bild, Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner will join Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund this summer.

Consummate professional

Lichtsteiner, a 34-year-old Swiss right-back, has been on the books of Juve since the summer of 2011, when he joined the club from fellow Serie A outfit Lazio.

And the ‘Swiss Express’ has since gone on to establish himself as an absolute icon in Turin, with his lung-busting, never-say-die performances up and down the right flank for the Bianconeri having proven absolutely crucial to both the domestic and European successes of the Italian outfit over the last 7 seasons.

All in all, Lichtsteiner has gone on to rack up over 250 appearances over the course of his stint at the Juventus Stadium, collecting 6 Serie A titles (with another on the way), 3 Coppa Italias (with the final of this year’s competition still to play), as well as reaching a pair of Champions League finals.

On the move

Despite his hero status in Turin, though, Lichtsteiner’s powers have begun to wane over recent seasons, with the 93-time capped Swiss international no longer considered as first-choice in Max Allegri’s squad.

As such, it had long been expected that the veteran stopper would depart the club this summer, with Lichtsteiner having confirmed exactly that over the weekend, following Juve’s 3-1 victory over Bologna.

Bundesliga bound

And, as per the aforementioned report from German outlet Bild today, Lichtsteiner’s next club have already struck a deal with the full-back, with Borussia Dortmund set to bring him to Signal Iduna Park on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Though Lichtsteiner did not reveal his next destination after confirming his plans to depart Juve on Saturday, the Swiss star did make clear that he would not play for another club in Italy, with Dortmund no doubt an appealing destination as the Bianconeri favourite’s career winds down.

The New York Giants stuck to their plan and drafted Saquon Barkley at No. 2 overall. Will it pay off with immediate impact?

Over the next week, our panel of ESPN NFL Insiders will break down the 2018 draftclass, starting with their picks for which team will get the most from their rookies.

Which team’s rookie class will be the most impactful in 2018?

Matt Bowen, NFL writer: Chicago Bears. It starts with linebacker Roquan Smith. He’s a blue-chip talent with the speed and natural instincts to find the ball. Great fit for Vic Fangio’s defense. Up front, Iowa center/offensive guard James Daniels has the athleticism and pro-ready technique to compete for a starting job. And wide receiverAnthony Miller should find a role as a slot target for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The quicks are there and so is the playmaking ability.

Dan Graziano, national NFL writer: Cleveland Browns. Is there any team that needs an impact from its rookie class more than the one that’s 1-31 over the last two seasons? We don’t know when No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield will take over as the starter, but it’s a safe bet it’ll happen at some point this season. They’ll give No. 4 pick Denzel Wardsignificant opportunity right away as a starting cornerback. And second-rounders Nick Chubb and Austin Corbett should help the run game. Opportunities abound in Cleveland, for rookies and everyone else.

Mina Kimes, senior writer: Denver Broncos. I’m a big fan of the Cowboys’ draft class as well, but I think Denver’s first three picks — defensive end Bradley Chubb, wide receiverCourtland Sutton, and running back Royce Freeman — could all become immediate contributors. Sutton, a big-bodied receiver from SMU, stands out as a potential red-zone threat for Case Keenum.

Mike Sando, senior NFL writer: New England Patriots. Other teams’ rookies will play more snaps and earn greater honors. As for impact? New England could emerge with a starting left tackle (Isaiah Wynn), a rotational running back (Sony Michel) and perhaps aDanny Amendola-replacement (Braxton Berrios) on a championship-caliber team.

Aaron Schatz, editor-in-chief of Football Outsiders: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There’s opportunity on the depth chart. Vita Vea slides right into the starting defensive line next to Gerald McCoy. Ronald Jones II should slide right into the starting running back spot. And given the weakness at cornerback and the age of their No. 1 CB Brent Grimes, who turns 35 in July, second-rounders M.J. Stewart and Carlton Davis could play a larger role than expected early.

coltsKevin Seifert, national NFL writer: Indianapolis Colts. It won’t be as flashy as some other classes, but the addition of two guards and two defensive linemen among the first 64 picks will significantly enhance the Colts’ long-standing trench weakness. GuardQuenton Nelson, especially, will give the Colts a much better chance of keeping their most prized asset — quarterback Andrew Luck — upright.

Field Yates, NFL Insider: New York Giants. Here’s the bottom line: a single player can dramatically impact the perception of a team’s collective draft class. Along those lines, no player is better equipped to contribute immediately — factored in his own ability plus the opportunity ahead — than Saquon Barkley. Beyond that, second-rounder Will Hernandez projects as a Day 1 starter. Should Barkley produce (and I expect a massive rookie season), it will be a positive reflection on the offensive line, as well.

Arsenal attackers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were all smiles on Sunday as they enjoyed a late night celebrating the Gunners’ 5-0 win over Burnley.

Gabon striker Aubameyang scored twice, assisting another, during the emphatic home win which marked the final home game for Arsene Wenger before he departs the club this summer.

Taking to Instagram late on Sunday, Aubameyang posted a photo with his ‘brother’ Mkhitaryan as the pair cut relaxed figures away from the pitch.

The Gabon striker scored twice on Sunday to mark a fitting home finale for Arsene Wenger

The pressure was on Arsenal’s players to provide Wenger with a fitting send off following their disappointing Europa League semi-final exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Thursday.

But Aubameyang, who played no part at the Wanda Metropolitano due to being ineligible, got the party started after 14 minutes with a neat finish.

Burnley, who secured European football after Everton’s failure to beat Southampton on Saturday evening, offered little resistance to rewrite the Emirates script as they went on to be hit for five.

Alexandre Lacazette, Sead Kolasinac and Alex Iwobi added to Aubameyang’s brace on the day.

Trips to Leicester City and Huddersfield Town will round off Wenger’s 22-year spell in charge of Arsenal but few will forget the atmosphere, emotion and performance of his final game at the Emirates.

Manchester United have reportedly moved to the head of the queue to sign Lazio‘s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Barcelona cooled their interest due to his €80 million (£70 million) price tag.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via MailOnline’s Robert Cottingham), Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is eager to add two more midfielders to his squad over the summer, and United sent scouts to cast their eye over Milinkovic-Savic last month.

The Serbian has a number of other suitors including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but United are now said to be leading the race as Barca have balked at Lazio’s hefty asking price.

Milinkovic-Savic, 23, has been a key part of the Lazio first team for the last three seasons and is enjoying a successful 2017-18 campaign.

In Serie A this term he has netted 11 goals and provided three assists in 32 appearances from his central midfield role.

He is able to operate as a No. 10, particularly in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but his preferred position is in the middle of the park, perhaps in a 4-3-3 system, where he can contribute both in defence and attack.

Along with his fantastic technique, passing range, ball control and maturity, he is also a physically imposing player and threatening in the air, per WhoScored.com:

United are one of few clubs who boast the financial clout to meet Lazio’s asking price, and Milinkovic-Savic has previously labelled Mourinho as “the best manager in the world,” per Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia).

United are not short on options in midfield. But Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic are more defensive minded in the middle of the park, Michael Carrick will be retiring at the end of the season and Marouane Fellainicould depart Old Trafford as his contract expires in the summer.

The prospect of Milinkovic-Savic playing alongside Paul Pogba in United’s midfield is an exciting one for Red Devils fans, and it could yet become a reality if Barca have pulled out of the running for the Serbia international.

HARRISBURG (KDKA) – After an independent review of the case, Attorney General Josh Shapiro wants the court system to allow the case of a Penn State University pledge’s hazing-related death to go to trial.

He also plans to file charges tomorrow against 12 additional fraternity members.

Shaprio said he wants justice for Timothy Piazza and his family.

Piazza died after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol and falling down the steps at a Beta Theta Pi pledge event.

Shapiro said he and his legal team took three key factors into account when reviewing the case:

  • The people who planned and participated the so-called “gauntlet,” or drinking event.
  • Who knew about Piazza’s fall?
  • Why they didn’t seek medical attention for him.

“We are committed to holding every responsible individual accountable for their actions in this tragedy consistent with Pennsylvania law and evidence in this case,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro also said he plans to work to protect college students all over the state by supporting anti-hazing legislation currently making its way through Harrisburg.

Lionel Messi’s hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4-2 win at Deportivo on Sunday has seen him overtake Liverpool’s Mohammad Salah in the race of the European Golden Shoe award.

Messi’s 41st club hat-trick helped Barca clinch the LaLiga title with four games remaining.

That puts the Argentine on 64 points, two clear of Salah, who failed to score in their 0-0 draw with Stoke City on Saturday.

Messi, who won last season’s European Golden Boot having scored 37 times to finish with a total of 74 points, is now in pole position for another individual title.

He has four league games remaining while Salah has two.

In third place is Lazio’s Ciro Immobile, just two goals behind Salah and three behind Messi; the Italian has three Serie A games remaining to make up the deficit.

Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is in fourth (28 goals, 56 points), while PSG’s Edinson Cavani and Inter’s Mauro Icardi have 27 goals (54 points). Tottenham striker Harry Kane is in seventh with 26 goals (52 points).

If Messi stays ahead of Salah, it would make him the first player to win the European Golden Shoe five times (2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2016/17).

Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri has added fuel to the rumours he could be set for a move to Chelsea by admitting his frustration with Juventus‘ ongoing dominance of Serie A.

He talked up the Premier League’s recent changing roster of champions—Manchester United were the last team to successfully defend the title in 2009—and warned of the risk in Italy of fans getting turned off, per Neil McLeman in the Mirror:

The only hope is that, in life, everything has to end sometime. Sooner or later, the domination will end. I must say, seeing the Premier League have this constant alternation of winners every year, it grows the love for teams and makes everyone have hope of success.

“It’s a different situation here in Italy. The risk is that we’ll lose many fans, because they cheer on teams that will never win and they know that too well. If we impoverish the whole system, then the rich will be impoverished too.

Massimiliano Allegri’s Juve look set to win their seventh consecutive Serie A title this season after Napoli’s impressive challenge faltered on Sunday.

Following Juve’s fightback from 2-1 down to a 3-2 victory against Inter Milan in the Derby d’Italia on Saturday, Napoli had to beat Fiorentina to move back to within a point of the Turin giants.

However, Kalidou Koulibaly—match-winner the week before against Juve—was sent off after just six minutes at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, and the Partenopei were soundly beaten 3-0.

It means Sarri’s side are now four points behind Juve with three games of the season remaining and, although the Old Lady still have to travel to in-form Roma, their other two remaining fixtures are winnable home games against Bologna and Hellas Verona.

After losing in Florence, it looks like Sarri is going to fall just short in his attempt to break Juve’s stranglehold.

And, having been in charge at the Stadio San Paolo since 2015, it has been reported that the 59-year-old will now look to move to pastures new.

According to the Partenopei‘s official radio station, Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (h/t Football Italia), Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is eyeing Sarri to fill the manager’s role at Stamford Bridge, and current Blues boss Antonio Conte could move the other way.

Certainly Sarri’s latest comments suggest he would be open to a new opportunity elsewhere, and he could be a fine replacement for Conte given how impressive he has been at Napoli with limited resources.

Why I Will Not Marry Nigerian Woman – Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr

Entertainment, News, sports

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr has given reasons he will not marry a Nigerian woman. Unlike former Nigerian manager, Clemens Westerhof got hooked to a Zimbabwean lady during his sojourn in Africa, Rohr, when asked in an interview with the Sun if he would consider marrying a Nigerian lady, said it would be difficult.
He cited cultural background and language difference as main reasons he won’t marry a Nigerian.
Rohr, a Franco-German replaced former Nigerian international, Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles coach.
Asked if he would likely take a second wife in Nigeria just as Clemens Westerhof did in Africa, he said, “My president (Amaju Pinnick) joked about it recently.
“He said he was going to hand me a Nigerian woman and we all laughed about it.
“To be sincere, Nigerian ladies are very beautiful and tempting but it is going to be very difficult to marry one. Language and cultural background will be a serious barrier.”

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday evening said that the State has the capacity to host international football

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday evening said that the State has the capacity to host international football tournaments and use sports as a tool to showcase its rich tourism, hospitality and entertainment culture. Governor Ambode, who spoke when he received the President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), Gianni Infantino and his team on a courtesy visit to the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, said the population, soccer enthusiasm and the tourism potentials that abound in the State are indicators to the fact that the State has the enabling environment to receive any FIFA projects in Nigeria. The Governor, while welcoming the choice of Lagos as the host city of the FIFA Executive Committee Summit, said it would present a great opportunity for the State to showcase its huge investment in football development especially for youths and women.
He also expressed confidence that the FIFA President and his team, after the visit, would consider Lagos favourably to host a FIFA competition, while also pledging support for events by the world’s football governing body. “I want to say that we are so excited that Lagos is playing host to the FIFA Executive Summit, we would be the second African city that would be hosting this kind of meeting and we are excited that you decided that Lagos would host it. “It is very important for us because soccer is big in Lagos and we are able to show you the kind of facilities and things that football can actually do to us as a nation.
I believe strongly that your hosting this meeting in Lagos portends greater potentials for us in Lagos; we are very strong on youth development and youth soccer development and also soccer development for women. “I believe as you decide tomorrow and then days after on where you intend to put your projects, Lagos stands to welcome all the projects of FIFA. We have the population, the enthusiasm and we also have the tourism potentials to actually receive any FIFA projects in Nigeria,” Governor Ambode said. Besides, Governor Ambode thanked Infantino for deeming it fit to select a retired Chief Judge of Lagos, Justice Ayotunde Philips as a member of the Ethics Committee of FIFA, saying that it was a testament to the State’s credibility.
“I want to personally thank you for selecting one of our retired Chief Judges, Justice Philips into the Ethics Committee of FIFA and that happens to be one of the most important committees in FIFA and I believe strongly that for us to have produced one of those members goes to show how credible that we can be in Lagos,” he said. Governor Ambode who also spoke at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF/Aiteo) Awards held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, said that partnering with the NFF for the hosting of the award was also a privilege to showcase the Lagos as the emerging sports hub for Africa.

DELIGHTED Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been crowned PFA Player of the Year.

A delighted Salah said: “It’s a big honour. I’ve worked hard and I’m very happy to win it.

“[The first Egyptian to win?] Hopefully I’m not the last one! I’m very proud to win and I’ve worked very hard.

“You’re comparing you name with some great names. To break the Premier League record is something huge in England and all over in the world.

“There are still three games to go. I want to break this record and also break the one for (42-game season). Let’s see what will happen.”

Salah added: “It’s an honour to win this as Player of the Year in the Premier League and especially because it’s voted by the players. So I’m very happy and very proud to win it.

“From day one I left the Premier League I wanted success here … I think I left and I came back as a different person … I didn’t have my chance (at Chelsea).”

The Egyptian fought off competition from Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne to scoop the prestigious individual prize on Sunday night.

Salah has scored an incredible 31 Premier League goals during his first season at Anfield, and has also helped himself to nine assists.

The former Chelsea man has been instrumental in Liverpool’s top four push under Jurgen Klopp.

Salah joined the Reds from Roma last summer for £37million and has quickly established himself as a club icon.

The 25-year-old has also been banging in the goals in Europe, leading Liverpool to a Champions League semi-final clash with Roma.

De Bruyne finished runner-up to Salah, with the Belgian sure to be disappointed at missing out on English football’s top individual accolade.

He has been the main man in City’s incredible title win, scoring eight goals and 15 assists this season.

The other players up for the award were Manchester United’s Davd De Gea, Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Manchester City duo David Silva and Leroy Sane.

Sane was named Young Player of the Year.

Jose Mourinho Blames Chelsea For Selling Liverpool Star Mohamed Salah – And Says The Blues Lied About His Departure

Mo Salah was sold by Chelsea after a failed two-year spell at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has laid the blame squarely at Chelsea’s door for selling Mo Salah in 2016.

The Egyptian star left Stamford Bridge under Mourinho’s reign after a failed two-year spell.

But the Manchester United boss insists he didn’t make the decision to sell Salah, who has lit up Europe this season with 43 goals for Champions League chasing Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho said Chelsea are to blame for selling Mo Salah in 2016

Salah left Chelsea for Roma in 2016 before the Reds brought him for £40million last summer.

Mourinho told ESPN Brazil: “People say that I was the one that sold Salah and it is the opposite.

“I was the one that bought Salah. I was the one that told Chelsea to buy Salah.

“But he came as a young kid, physically he was not ready, mentally he was not ready, socially and culturally he was lost and everything was tough for him.

“We decided to put him on loan and he asked for that as well.

“Chelsea decided to sell him, OK?

Mo Salah has forced his way into Ballon d'Or contention with his stunning performances for Liverpool this season

“And when they say that I was the one that sold him it is a lie.

“I agreed to send him on loan, I thought it was necessary, I thought that Chelsea had wingers.

“Some of them are still there like Willian, [Eden] Hazard and all those players already in a different level.”

Mourinho added: “But effectively I did buy Salah, I didn’t sell Salah, but it doesn’t matter.

“What matters is that he is a fantastic player, and I am really happy for everything that is happening for him and especially because he scores against everyone and he didn’t score against us in two games.”

White Sox P Farquhar (aneurysm) able to walk

https://ift.tt/2JsHaNd

Chicago White Sox pitcher Danny Farquhar has been able to go on light walks and remains in stable condition in intensive care after suffering a brain aneurysm last weekend, manager Rick Renteria said.

Farquhar underwent surgery Saturday, a day after suffering what the team announced as a brain hemorrhage stemming from a ruptured aneurysm.

“He is progressing positively, and everyone is very thankful for that,” Renteria said Thursday. “It’s all still guarded and very delicate, but we’re happy to report that it’s moving in a positive direction.”

Farquhar collapsed in the dugout after coming off the mound during the sixth inning of Friday’s home game against the Houston Astros. After receiving treatment from White Sox medical personnel and on-site emergency medical technicians, Farquhar was transported to nearby Rush University Medical Center, where he remains.

Before Thursday’s game at Kansas City, the White Sox took the field for batting practice wearing black T-shirts that read “PRAY FOR 43,” with “FOR DANNY” on the left sleeves.

White Sox reliever Nate Jones also said the team would keep Farquhar’s No. 43 jersey in the bullpen.

“It will be out there until he walks back in here,” Jones said. “He’s a brother of ours, and we care about him. He’s still part of this team, and we want to show our support.”

Farquhar was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Monday.
