Throngs to pack Times Square for mild, rainy New Year’s Eve

NEW YORK (AP) — Snoop Dogg, Sting and Christina Aguilera will welcome 2019 in a packed Times Square Monday along with revelers from around the world who come to see the traditional crystal ball drop, fireworks and a blizzard of confetti.

Spectators are expected to start assembling in early afternoon for the made-for-TV extravaganza. As has been the case for years, the celebration will take place under tight security, with partygoers checked for weapons and then herded into pens, ringed by metal barricades, where they wait for the stroke of midnight.

Any repeat visitors from last year’s celebration will undoubtedly be praying for better weather. Last year’s event was one of the coldest on record at 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Forecasters say Monday’s party will take place amid mild temperatures but possibly rain. Umbrellas are banned for security reasons.

Rain or shine, performers will try to light up the crowd.

Bastille and New Kids On The Block will perform medleys of their hit songs on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” and singer songwriter Bebe Rexha will perform John Lennon’s “Imagine” before the 60-second countdown to the midnight ball drop.

People who arrive early enough to grab a standing spot in Times Square itself may have a good view of the stages where the entertainers perform. The rest of the throngs, stuffed into pens stretching several blocks north toward Central Park, will be able to follow the action on viewing screens.

There are no public toilets in the pens, backpacks are banned and there are no garbage cans either, so picnicking for the event can be rough. But revelers will have plenty of companionship, though experts say probably well short of the 1 million to 2 million spectators claimed by city officials and organizers.

Thousands of police officers will be on hand to provide security, with the help of bomb-sniffing dogs, 1,225 security cameras and 235 “blocker vehicles” used to stop any potential vehicle attacks.

The show’s official programing begins at 6 p.m., with the lighting and raising of the New Year’s Eve Ball up a pole atop One Times Square. The Sino-American Friendship Association will flip the giant switch that lights the ball before presenting a Chinese cultural performance culminating in red and gold pyrotechnics.

Saudi Arabia launches initiative to improve country’s lifestyle

international News, News

May 4, 2018

RIYADH (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia plans to spend 50 billion riyals ($13.33 billion) by 2020 on an initiative to promote entertainment, health, sports and education as part of a modernizing drive by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

At an event in Riyadh on Thursday, Ahmed al-Khatib, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA), said the program, called Quality of Life, should generate 300,000 jobs by 2020, most of which will come under the General Sports Authority.

“The initiatives will cost a total of 50 billion riyals, and government spending will be around 60 percent, with 40 percent from the private sector,” Khatib told Reuters.

“The entire benefit from this big spending will be for the private sector, and this supports the 2030 Vision that strengthens the role of the private sector.”

The kingdom has undergone many changes in recent months, holding concerts and opening cinemas. The moves in the deeply conservative Muslim kingdom are hailed as proof of progress spearheaded by Prince Mohammed, who has appealed to the young since he ascended to power.

The kingdom’s strict social customs and rapid development created a nation in which community is highly valued but opportunities for public gathering are scarce. Obesity rates are also high. Many Saudis revere the harsh life of the country’s Bedouin forebears.

Saudi citizens have no vote and falling oil income means economic horizons may contract in coming years. As a result, improving the quality of life is seen as important for ensuring political stability.

International human rights groups also urge the kingdom to improve its treatment of human rights advocates, stop executions and cancel its pervasive system of male guardianship.

At the event, Khatib listed a water park, three theme parks, museums and more cinemas as projects in the initiative, which is itself part of a National Transformation Plan that includes hundreds of steps to modernize the economy and society by 2020.

Retired French footballer Thierry Henry, American actress Katie Holmes and British actor Idris Elba attended the event, invited to promote the initiative and Saudi Arabia’s image to an international audience.

Saudi female fencer Lubna al-Omair told the crowd she enjoyed riding her bike and going to museums when she did her master’s abroad.

“One of the things I was worried I would lose (when I moved back) was the sport I had gotten attached to and that had become a part of me,” she said, adding that now she could practice fencing.

BBNaija Winner: Miracle Reveals I Will Pay My N4.5M Tithe To The Church

BBNaija, Big Brother Naija, Celebrity Gists, Entertainment, News

miracle-2The Big Brother Nigeria Winner, Mr Miracle Igbokwe has shown another side to his suave demeanour. After three months of drama, suspense and intrigue , in the reality TV show, Big Brother Naija: Double Wahala which came to a cataclysmal  end last Sunday with the dashing pilot, Miracle Ikechukwu Igbokwe emerging as winner, where he smiled home with N25 million cash, a brand new SUV and other prizes totaling N45 million, Miracle have started unveiling his plans on how to spend his winnings.

Being a good Christian, Miracle has vowed to pay his tithe to the last kobo first. He made this pledge to TS Weekend interview on Monday afternoon, shortly before boarding en-route Nigeria, at the OLiver R Thambo International Airport, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Here are extracts from the Interview:

How are you feeling now?
I’m feeling like a flyboy. I really appreciate you all because it’s your love that got me this (N45 million) prize.

What do you think won you the prize?
I will say it’s the grace of God.

As a Christian, are you going to pay your tithe from the money you won?
To me, it’s always God first. He has blessed me and I have to show that I appreciate. Yes, definitely, I’ll pay my tithe.

What are you planning to do with the money?
Right now, I think it’s just time for me to relax and think about what exactly I want to do with the money.

How long is it going to take you to start something with the money?
I have no idea because I don’t even know what’s happening right now. It’s like I’m in a dreamland. I’ve been indoors for three months. I need to get back to reality to know what’s happening outside and make my decision.

Who are the people you are going to miss?
I’m not going to miss anybody because all of us will still be together in Nigeria, but I will miss the Saturday parties we used to have in the house.

Innuendo Issues: Sex in Movies

Sex in Movies

For those of you who have read my article regarding profanity, you’ll know that I take a dim view of immorality portrayed in movies, unless done for a clear artistic reason. To me, it seems like films today are inundated with vulgarities and subjects that are intended to embarrass or arouse the viewer. Sex in movies is a trend that won’t die. It’s come to where I’m uncomfortable viewing a new movie with others for fear of what we may see.

This issue recently came to my attention when I saw the trailer for the new John Cena movie, Blockers (2018), now in theaters. It was crass and tasteless and something I shouldn’t have wasted a minute-and-a-half on. While I have no intention of seeing it, I did hear quite an earful from a friend of mine and I’m appalled with how Hollywood plays fast and loose with its morals nowadays.

Sex in Movies

What happened to the times when sex was something only alluded to, never actually depicted? Why is sex no longer seen as too taboo to show on-screen? Why do we revel in these salacious matters instead of turning away in disgust?

What Does a Clear Artistic Reason Mean?

Let’s start by defining what a “clear artistic reason” is. This is when the issue gets tricky, because something clearly artistic to me could be completely vulgar to you. It’s mainly a relative term for someone to categorize a movie according to their own values. Here are the three primary criteria that I use:

#1: Does the innuendo or intercourse move the plot along?

A better way to ask that question is like this: if I took that scene out, would the movie still make sense? A good example of a movie not meeting this standard is the sex scene in Top Gun (1986). When I was younger (and still today), my family would skip over this particular scene. Later, I skimmed through it to see if I’d ever missed out on any of the plot. Turns out, the only thing I missed was Tom Cruise’s aggressive tongue — something I could have gone my entire life without seeing.

However, this wasn’t the case with the movie Dave (1993), in which there was a particular sex scene that we always skipped that I’ve just now realized filled in a major plot point; apparently I’d just glossed over this point as a kid. The need for sex scenes varies from movie to movie.

#2: Is it realistic?

No, I don’t mean if the sex was realistic. I mean was the situation realistic? Would these characters really have engaged in sex at the moment in that location, or was it just added because the movie “needed” a sex scene? My favorite example of how not to meet this criteria is the sex scene in Shoot ‘Em Up (2007). In the midst of harrowing circumstances, Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci decide to go to a hotel room and, instead of getting some much-needed rest, and decide to have sex. As if things weren’t unrealistic enough, gunmen come in and try to kill them. Owen, remaining coupled to his partner the whole time while she makes god-awful noises, kills all the assailants.

Sex in Movies

#3: Is it done purely for shock value or for a deeper reason?

This one gets a little harder to define, which is where individual opinion comes in. For example, I believe the sex scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) are purely erotica with little to no reason behind them other than to arouse its audience. However, I think that the sex scene (mainly alluded to) in Forrest Gump (1994) represents Forrest’s delayed loss of innocence, and thus has an artistic reason. Yet, I know there are many people who would disagree with me.

Sex in Movies

Why Does Hollywood Love Sex?

Simple answer: humans are animals at their very core.

Because of this, people buy tickets for movies they know will be sexually explicit. Look at Deadpool (2016). Despite the fact that everyone knew that movie would be raunchier than any previous Marvel film, they fully supported it anyway, making it a cinematic smash. And while it’s obvious no one went into the theater purely for the sex, they sure didn’t walk out or denounce it. If anything, they probably feel it only enhanced the movie’s rebellious atmosphere.

Like I’ve said before, if people continue to go to these types of movies and distribution companies make money, you’ll get more of this content rather than less of it. The fact that it offends some people doesn’t mean that they’ll stop making films with explicit sex scenes.

Sex in Movies

Image via British Heart Foundation

Is a Sex Scene Ever Necessary?

I know I may be in the minority in this, but I venture to say that no sex scene is ever truly necessary. You can always allude to it, but there’s never a reason to show so much of it other than to appeal to the lurid interests of the audience.

My question is: do movie directors realize that pornography exists? Do they realize that people aren’t going to pay for porn when they can get it for free online? So, why include it in movies, other than to create an awkward situation for everyone watching it? The sex scene is the most uncomfortable part in any movie, so why do such scenes keep getting included? They obviously don’t need to, so I shake my head when directors feel that adding a sex scene makes their movie better than a movie without one.

Sex in Movies

But, I know my requests will fall on Hollywood’s deaf ears. So, I stick to my criteria and continue to shyly avert my eyes when the action gets too hot and heavy for my tastes. But beware: movies will only degrade further and further into promiscuity from here.

And Tom Cruise’s tongue will get more and more aggressive.

Allardyce wants Aubameyang for Everton

There’s a new boss at Goodison Park, and his first move is to find a replacement for departed frontman Romelu Lukaku. Sam Allardyce has taken the reins over at Everton, and, according to the Mirror, his first move will be to make a bold £60 million move to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over from Borussia Dortmund next summer.

Lukaku took his 25 goals from 2016-17 to Manchester United during the latest window, and so far, the combination of Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn’t managed to make up for the loss of the Belgium international.

A woeful start to the campaign saw manager Ronald Koeman sacked, and now Allardyce, whose Toffees sit mid-table after some recent positive results, is already looking to next season and a goals influx in the form of Aubameyang.

The Gabon international already has 19 goals in all competitions for Dortmund, but Everton won’t have it easy, as Liverpool and Chelsea are also rumoured to be interestedin making Aubameyang’s Premier League dream come true.

– The Daily Mail says a recurrence of a leg injury for Schalke’s Leon Goretzka has caused Manchester United to back off a mooted January move for the Germany international.

– Germany international striker Sandro Wagner is closing in on a return to his boyhood club Bayern Munich, according to Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann.

– Midfielder Juan David Cabezas will remain with the Houston Dynamo after the club secured his full transfer from Deportivo Cali on Thursday, the team has announced.

Doctor Who Illegally Prescribed Prince Painkillers Before Overdose Pays $30,000 Settlement

(MINNEAPOLIS) — A Minnesota doctor accused of illegally prescribing an opioid painkiller for Prince a week before the musician died from a fentanyl overdose has agreed to pay $30,000 to settle a federal civil violation, according to documents made public Thursday.

The settlement between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Dr. Michael Todd Schulenberg comes as state prosecutors prepared to announce Thursday morning whether they’ll file any criminal charges stemming from their two-year investigation into Prince’s death.

Schulenberg is not currently a target of any criminal investigation, federal prosecutors said in a letter to his attorney. His attorney, Amy Conners, released a statement Thursday saying “there have been no allegations made by the Government that Dr. Schulenberg had any role in Prince’s death.”

Prince was 57 when he was found alone and unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate on April 21, 2016. An autopsy found he died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more powerful than heroin. State and federal authorities have been investigating the source of the fentanyl for nearly two years, and no one has been criminally charged.

But federal prosecutors and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration alleged Schulenberg, a family physician who saw Prince twice before he died, violated the Controlled Substances Act when he wrote a prescription in the name of someone else on April 14, 2016.

The settlement, dated Monday, does not name Prince or make any references to the Prince investigation — but search warrants previously released say Schulenberg told authorities he prescribed oxycodone to Prince on April 14 and put it under the name of Prince’s bodyguard and close friend, Kirk Johnson, “for Prince’s privacy.” Schulenberg’s attorney disputed that, saying Schulenberg did not prescribe opiates to any patient with the intent that they go to Prince.

“After he learned of Prince’s addiction, he immediately worked to refer Prince to a treatment facility and to transfer care to a chemical dependency specialist,” Conners said.

She said Schulenberg decided to settle to avoid the expense, delay, and unknown outcome of litigation, and that “he made no admission of facts nor liability and denies any such liability.”

Oxycodone, the generic name for the active ingredient in OxyContin, was not listed as a cause of Prince’s death. But it is part of a family of painkillers driving the nation’s overdose and addiction epidemic, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 2 million Americans abused or were addicted to prescription opioids, including oxycodone, in 2014.

A laboratory report obtained by The Associated Press notes that one of the pills found in a prescription bottle in Paisley Park that bore Johnson’s name tested positive for oxycodone.

Under the settlement, Schulenberg has 30 days to pay $30,000 to the U.S. government. He also agreed to stricter requirements for logging and reporting his prescriptions of controlled substances for two years. Among them, he must keep detailed logs of all controlled substances he prescribes, allow the DEA to inspect the logs and other records without prior notice, and allow the DEA access to his prescribing history on demand.

It’s illegal for a doctor to write a prescription for someone under another person’s name. Anyone convicted of doing so could lose their DEA registration — meaning they could no longer prescribe controlled substances — and could face discipline from their state medical board.

The settlement says the DEA won’t revoke Schulenberg’s registration, unless he does not comply. It’s unclear whether the state medical board will take action. His license is currently active and he has no disciplinary action against him.

A confidential toxicology report obtained by The Associated Press in March showed high concentrations of fentanyl in the singer’s blood, liver and stomach. The concentration of fentanyl in Prince’s blood alone was 67.8 micrograms per liter, which outside experts called “exceedingly high.”

Prince did not have a prescription for fentanyl. Search warrants unsealed about a year after he died showed that authorities searched his home, cellphone records of associates and his email accounts to try to determine how he got the drug. Authorities found numerous pills in various containers stashed around Prince’s home, including some counterfeit pills that contained fentanyl.

While many who knew Prince over the years said he had a reputation for clean living, some said he also struggled with pain after years of performing at an intense level. Documents unsealed last year paint a picture of a man struggling with an addiction to prescription opioids and withdrawal, and they also show there were efforts to get him help.

Associates at Paisley Park told investigators that Prince was recently “going through withdrawals, which are believed to be the result of the abuse of prescription medication,” according to an affidavit.

Just six days before he died, Prince passed out on a plane, and an emergency stop was made in Moline, Illinois. The musician had to be revived with two doses of a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

The day before his death, Paisley Park staffers contacted California addiction specialist Dr. Howard Kornfeld as they were trying to get Prince help. Kornfeld sent his son, Andrew, to Minnesota that night, and the younger Kornfeld was among those who found Prince’s body. Andrew Kornfeld was carrying buprenorphine, a medication that can be used to help treat opioid addiction.

getting healthier by playing sports by Lifewithllired

Getting Healthier By Playing Sports

Focusing the mind and body:

Future success:

Participating in sports can actually help you with your work and your school life. Sports can show you that if you practice something for long enough, then there is a high chance that you will go on to succeed, and this is a brilliant way for you to see the world differently. Sports can also be an outlet for any stress that you are experiencing right now, as well, and by letting go of this stress, you can then begin to focus more on the job that you do and the situation at hand. Of course, if you have never participated in a sport before, then there has never been a better time to start and you may even find that there are plenty of starter courses available for you to look at. This could include beginner football classes, hockey lessons, and more.

If you are worried about taking part in a sport where everyone is better than you, then this is one of the best ways for you to put an end to that. If you are shy, anxious, or unconfident, then sports can really help to bring you out of your shell. You can even play with your family, and the benefits are great and truly endless!

A better social life:

A lot of sports require you to work either as part of a team or as a unit. Even sports that have individual scores, such as running, still have some elements of teamwork involved. For example, if you were to travel to another city, then you may need to car-share or even train with one another. When you are a member of a team, you can then go on to develop higher cooperation skills, as well. By having these skills, you’ll have more focus, commitment, and dedication which can help you out a lot when it comes to your relationships and work life.

Sports are not only great for getting in shape, but they are wonderful for your mental health. Gather your friends, start a team, and watch as your mind and body reap the benefits.

BBnaija Day 77: May The Best Win

BBNaija, Big Brother Naija

During the Live Eviction Show, Biggie had Housemates play the final Wager challenge.

miraOne Last Try

Biggie called the House into the Arena, where ten suitcases were lined up, awaiting for the eight remaining Housemates to open them. The aim was for Housemates to secure another Wager victory, in light of a slight twist: each suitcase contained a small gifts, but only one held a cash reward. Biggie instructed Housemates that whoever opened the suitcase containing the money reward would have a claim on the reward, yet also automatically imply that the entire House lost the Wager.

Hanging in Suspense

At the sound of the buzzer Housemates came forward and had two minutes to take position behind their chosen luggage. The suspense kept everyone on their toes, as they touched, lifted and shook the cases in their hands – all in the full awareness they were not to open any until instructed so by Biggie. Then Biggie instructed Housemates to open their numbered suitcases to reveal the content.

It’s Not Over Yet

While Nina and Tobi had difficulties opening theirs, Miracle looked unsure whether to smile or not upon learning he had won a two hundred thousand Naira, for it also meant the entire House had lost the totality of their Wager. Meanwhile Biggie had called Lolu,Tobi, Miracle, Nina and Alex back to the lounge, leaving Anto, Khloe and Cee-C standing in the Arena, waiting to find out their fate.

Richie Sambora, left, and Jon Bon Jovi perform during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Saturday, April 14, 2018, in Cleveland.

Bon Jovi reunited with former members onstage Saturday night to celebrate their admission into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, as the late icon Nina Simone and other nominees made up this year’s induction class.

Bon Jovi was the first band to take the stage in Cleveland’s Public Auditorium, USA Today reported. Band members Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan and Tico Torres reunited with former bandmates Richie Sambora and Alec John.

Jon Bon Jovi gave a 20-minute-long speech onstage, which he said he had been writing for years.

“I’ve been writing this speech since I first strummed a broom and sang at the top of the stairs of my childhood home,” he said, according to the paper. “I’ve actually written it many ways, many times. Some days I write a thank you speech and other days, I write a (expletive)-you speech.”

Sambora, who left the New Jersey band in 2013, and Alec John Such, who left in 1994, embraced their former bandmates with a hug after each one spoke onstage to accept the honor. They performed together, singing crowd favorites like “Livin’ on a Prayer,” ”You Give Love a Bad Name” and “It’s My Life.”

Sambora thanked his fans and bandmates, the paper reported.

Once again, The Monkees are nowhere to be found.

“Songs are very profound in a way, because you’re connecting with humanity,” he said. “Everybody’s more alike than they are (different), and especially now in today’s world, that’s really important.”

Simone, who died in 2003, was welcomed into the Rock Hall in a groundbreaking way from performers who she has deeply inspired, from Lauryn Hill and Andra Day to Mary J. Blige.

Hill stretched her voice and sang in French, in honor of Simone’s music, which earned her a standing ovation from the crowd. Day, a Grammy-nominated R&B singer, hit high notes that also earned her applause. Both women exceptionally displayed their powerhouse voices.

Blige inducted Simone, calling the singer “bold, strong, feisty and fearless.”

“Her voice was so distinctive and powerful and I never heard anything like it,” the R&B superstar said.

Simone was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys. Her brother, Sam Waymon, accepted the honor on his sister’s behalf.

The 33rd annual Rock Hall ceremony kicked off with a tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October at age 66.

The Killers earned a loud applause from the audience when they started performing “American Girl,” then transitioned to “Free Fallin’.”

The Cars and four first-time nominees, including Simone, Dire Straits, the Moody Blues and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, make up the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class.

The ceremony didn’t end this year with the group jam session of the induction class that has become Rock Hall tradition, USA Today reported.

Instead, inductees the Moody Blues ended the night as the last act. Rock Hall voters have recently opened their hearts to progressive rockers, which benefited the “Nights in White Satin” singers.

Howard Stern inducted this year’s class, telling jokes along the way, including one about Rock Hall co-founder Jann Wenner, questioning why he was qualified to vote on who enters the hall.

Stern said the Rolling Stone magazine founder doesn’t play any instruments “but he did start a great magazine … and now it’s the size of a pamphlet.”

Beyonce becomes first black woman to headline Coachella, reunites with Destiny’s Child

Beyonce becomes first black woman to headline Coachella, reunites with Destiny’s Child

Beyonce became the first woman of color to headline Coachella on Saturday.

Beyonce made history Saturday night by becoming the first black woman to headline Coachella, marking her return to the stage since giving birth to her twins Rumi and Sir Carter.

“Y’all ready Coachella?” Beyonce said at the start of her set. “Thank you Coachella for allowing me to be the first black woman to headline.”

The singer, whose performance sparked the trending hashtag #Beychella, performed on the second night of the music festival in Indio, Calif. Fans have been anticipating Beyonce’s return to the festival stage after she canceled her performance the year before because of her pregnancy. Lady Gaga stepped in to fill the lineup in 2017.

“I was supposed to perform at Coachella before, but I ended up getting pregnant,” Beyoncé said. “I had time to dream with two beautiful souls in my belly and this, this is everything I dreamed of and more. I hope y’all enjoyed the show, we worked very hard.”

The 36-year-old singer also sent festivalgoers into a frenzy when she brought out Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams for a Destiny’s Child reunion. Rumors about the reunion have made headlines for months. The trio last performed together at the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show.

“MY GIRLS!!!! Tonight couldn’t have been more magical!!! #Coachella2018 #BeyChella,” Williams wrote on Instagram shortly after taking the stage.

Rowland also posted a group photo with the caption: “ma-kee-tata”

Beyonce’s sister, Solange Knowles, and husband Jay-Z also joined Beyonce on stage during her set.

Her performance with Jay-Z gave a preview of the couple’s upcoming On The Run II tour set for this summer. Her last performance was during the 2017 Grammy Awards.

BBNaija 2018: Payporte finally speaks on alleged poor treatment of workers

The official sponsors of Big Brother Naija show, Payporte, has reacted to report that staff of its company were being owed salaries and treated poorly.

According to some aggrieved staff on social media, Payporte treats them poorly, owes them months of salaries yet spends millions on sponsoring competitions such as Big Brother Naija, and signing on brand ambassadors.

However, Abioye Olubodun, an aide to the CEO of Payporte, Eyo Bassey has denied the report.

Olubodun told Punch that workers were not being owed, adding that those complaining left the company without following proper resignation processes.

“It is a lie, they are not being owed. The people that did not get their money are those that left the company without properly resigning their appointments and those that still have company properties such as cars and expensive cameras in their possessions.

“If you want to leave a company, there is a process to follow and that is the way it is everywhere. Your boss has to clear you, otherwise it would be regarded that you went AWOL.

“It is unfortunate that the former staff had to go to this length. They just need to do the right thing and everything would be resolved. They don’t want to do the right thing but they want to get paid.

“The company doesn’t have issues with them; they have just been told to bring the items in their possessions and they would get paid their entitlements. It is not true that they were being owed.”

Speaking on reports that Payporte treats its staff poorly despite millions gotten from Big Brother Naija, Olubodun added:

“That is not true. I am a staff of the company and I can tell you that I am well treated. Meanwhile, the MD is aware of the allegations and he is planning to call a press conference at the end of the month.”

BBNaija 2018: Ifu Ennada speaks on when she will reveal identity of who raped her, votes manipulation

BBNaija, Big Brother Naija

Evicted housemates of the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality show, Ifu Ennada has spoken on reports making the rounds on manipulation of votes.

Ifu ennada speaking with Punch said although she was really expectant to return into the house, she does not think the votes were tampered with.

According to her,the results were how Nigerians truly voted.

Ennada further revealed that her life outside Big Brother has not been very easy as expected.

She said, “It has not been very smooth since leaving BBNaija, but it has been good. I miss the house; sometimes I miss the diary session with Big Brother and I miss the Saturday night parties.

“I wished I was one of the two persons who returned to the house. I even campaigned for people to vote for me and my people tried for me, but I didn’t make it.

” I had the third highest vote. Though I am aware that people felt the voting process was tampered with, I don’t believe that. I feel they showed us how the people truly voted.”

Speaking on claims that she shared her rape story to gain popularity, she said, “Do I look like one who needs the sympathy of people? Only foolish people would think I put out my story for publicity.

“Right from the first day I came back to Nigeria, I said I wanted to release a short film, Broken Virgin. Then, Big Brother was yet to announce that two people would return to the reality show. I had already started doing graphics; posters for my short film.

“People who have been following me know the truth; people who don’t know me can say rubbish. Why should anyone use her rape story as a joke or play?”

She further promised to reveal her rape culprit soon, reiterating that she was not raped by Singer,CDQ.

“I was the one who was raped and I didn’t talk about it until recently. When I am ready to reveal the rapist’s identity, I will do so. For now, it is no one’s business.

“I don’t know what gave people the impression that it was CDQ. I didn’t mention CDQ’s name. I don’t understand people,” she added.

BBNaija Day 76: The Saturday Party Aftermaths

BBNaija, Big Brother Naija

The Housemates have really brought Double Wahala whether it was before, during or after their Saturday parties.

BBnWith only two Saturday parties left, we take a moment to reminisce on who and what we’ll miss the most about the Doube Wahala parties.

Whether it was quarrels or playing games, the Housemates really took it to them in making sure we enjoyed the parties and what came after, as much as they did.

The Outfits And Make up

Each Saturday, the Housemates have made it a point to look good in the outfits they were given. Together with the always on point make up, the ladies drove the wheel and took us to envy land, all making it an effortless task. The guys on the other side, have brought boyfriend goals whether with their traditional outfits or just plain pyjamas.

The Cries, Quarrels and Vomits

Looking back, it’s been a roller coaster ride for the Housemates and at some point after a few sips on ‘Victoria’s tears’ some have had moments that they’re rather just sweep under the rug.

Remember the moments between Cee-C and Tobi in the beginning where they would just cuddle after the party and dish out couple’s goals everywhere, weren’t you just envious?

How about the time when Nina and Alex had taken beer for the first time? When all Alex could think of was Leo?

It was all fun and nice but time changed and the wheel turned and all that would come of the Saturday parties would be quarrels, arguments and insults. They say a drunk man tells no tales and the end result of those arguments is still evident today.

Oh, how can we forget the vomits from Rico Swavey and Alex? At least they had solid friendships in the House and they were well taken care of.

The Games

No person is as honest as drunk person and out of the games they played after the parties, nothing came out of the Housemates except sincere honesty.

Truth or dare was one of their favourite in the beginning and it made them open up about each other more. And somehow they learned a few things about one another.

However, with all that said, the Big Brother Naija Housemates made Saturday Nights parties a thing to look forward to.

BBNaija Day 76: Unity In Display

BBNaija, Big Brother Naija

The Housemates wrapped their Airtel task by having lunch together.

BBnThe Housemate’s Airtel task of showing humanity towards one another, came to an end this afternoon in a beautiful display of unity.

The thought of being in the House for the money was put aside for a few hours while the Housemates enjoyed their cooked meals.

Borrowing from Lolu’s words: ‘There’s always something to like even the inconsequential things’ proved true while the Housemates exchanged laughter.

The week-long task, which was divided into three has seen the Housemates complimenting each other, doing things for one another and eventually having lunch as a collective, which is something that had become a rare sight in the House.

In the midst of the caucus in the House with Housemates making it clear on who they are with and against, it was refreshing to see them coming together over home cooked meals.

Moments Short Lived

Biggie’s thought of bringing the House together served its purpose because for minute there, the Housemates forgot about competing and enjoyed each other’s company.

Even though others didn’t directly engage, the moment was short lived because as soon as the task ended it was each to the holes.

The conversations ended on the table and the Housemates decided to go to sleep. It’s true that best moments are short lived and hopefully, in their stay in the Big Brother House they will take this particular moment with.

BBNaija Day 76: The Sinkers and The Swimmers

BBNaija, Big Brother Naija

Being in the House and playing the game is one; handling external backlashes however will be whole different ball game.

BBN1.jpgThe immediacy provided by social media benefits both ‘good-willers’ and ‘predators’ alike, affording both viewing spectrums free reign to explore different perimeters of communication, share unsolicited opinions and to bring out unseen alter egos; and seeing as the 25 million Naira journey has about come to an end, the Housemates will most definitely be fighting a lot of virtual battles thanks to the viewers’ perceptions of them and whether they’re ready or not, here it comes.

Handling The Heat

Nina and Miracle definitely managed to place themselves on ‘sweetheart’ pedestals thanks to their goosebump giving moments, however, the love birds came into the show as units and that’s exactly how they’ll be handling themselves out there. Seeing as Miracle successfully cracked the shell in which he was enclosed initially, he might just have a bit of control when dealing with haters but for Nina, it might just be a different ball game.

Lolu’s ‘wise man’ and ‘word-smith’ traits have certainly won him favour with intellects and empathizers alike. Having ever been on the defensive front when dealing with quarrels, he’s managed to keep his hands clean and because of that, might have very little backlashes to deal with, or so we think. Despite having thrown hints of being a Yoruba demon and having a slippery tongue, Tobi has managed to redeem himself and was consequently placed on the ‘friendship goals’ pedestal. He too might handle backlashes quite gracefully.

Khloe and Anto are unarguably covered in thick skin thanks to having been outside and for that reason, are more likely to brush off the insults and thrive on the good vibes.

Alex has never been ashamed of her colourful and uniquely messy personality, often perceived as noisy and disturbing. In fact, she suffered a few heavy backlashes but quickly bounced back and held her own. Just like Cee-C, her ‘fireball’ demeanour isn’t at all what she adopted in the House but an innate trait she often uses as a defence mechanism. The two obviously care less about external opinions. While their battles promise to be great, they’ll most likely hover over them and survive.

The Former and The Latter

While the Housemates are aware of the risk factors, with the exception of Anto and Khloe who’d experienced both the good and the bad first hand post-Eviction and pre-bring back; their different personalities will definitely come into play when handling themselves out there because what was no longer will be, it’s either they sink or swim.

Leo Santa Cruz, Abner Mares eager to renew L.A. rivalry in rematch

leo-santa-cruz-abner-mares-eager-to-renew-l-a-rivalry-in-rematch-1170x500.jpgThe featherweight world title rematch between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares has been a long time coming since their first action-packed encounter in August 2015.Immediately after Santa Cruz won a majority decision and vacant title in a fierce fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Mares said he wanted a rematch, and Santa Cruz said he would give him one.

But it has taken time and twists and turns to get to the point where they will meet again on June 9 in the main event of a Showtime card, again at the Staples Center in another battle for Los Angles bragging rights.

“It was a really close fight the first time. Before the fight, I told him I would give him the rematch, just like I would have wanted if I lost,” Santa Cruz said this week as he met Mares face to face in Los Angeles at the kickoff news conference to announce the bout. “Now is the time, and I think this fight is going to be even better than the first fight. Mares will be better with (trainer) Robert Garcia. He has many champions, and I’ve seen the improvement. That’s great motivation for me.”

Mares has had to wait for the rematch longer than he wanted to, but he is very excited that it is finally on.

“The fight is here now, and it’s official. I’m eager to get this win and get redemption,” Mares said. “There were things I could have done that would have made the fight easier for myself. Once you get in there, I know we all have a plan, but once you hear the crowd, it can go out the window. I’m a warrior and that type of fighter who’s looking to get the win no matter what.

“This fight is dedicated to my dad as he battles cancer. The only way I can pay him back or try to lift his spirits is to train hard in the gym and give him this win. If he sees me not giving up, I think it will give him the courage to keep fighting his battle.”

Leo Santa Cruz

“I’m not worried about the decision in the first fight. I think he landed the clearer punches, but it was definitely a close fight. I was happy with my performance as far as pleasing the crowd. I’ve moved on to the rematch. I’m going to make adjustments and get the win.”

Since that first fight, Santa Cruz (34-1-1, 19 KOs), 29, has fought four times, including losing and regaining his title in two tremendous battles with Carl Frampton. Mares (31-2-1, 15 KOs), 32, has fought just twice, but he claimed a secondary belt while also changing trainers to work with Garcia.

The rematch was supposed to take place last fall but Santa Cruz elected to put it off for one more fight as he and fellow three-division world titleholder Mares both won on an October doubleheader.

One of the reasons for putting it off one more fight was because Santa Cruz’s father and trainer, Jose Santa Cruz, was once again struggling with his health.

He was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, and has had his ups and downs, including being forced to have a very limited role in the training camp for the first Frampton fight, for which Leo was instead trained by his brother. But the elder Santa Cruz said he will be in camp and will train his son for the rematch with Mares.

“This fight is dedicated to my dad as he battles cancer,” Leo Santa Cruz said. “The only way I can pay him back or try to lift his spirits is to train hard in the gym and give him this win. If he sees me not giving up, I think it will give him the courage to keep fighting his battle.”

Jose Santa Cruz has shown the sort of fight against cancer that his son has always showed in the ring. He is determined to see his son through training camp be in his corner on fight night.

“My fight with cancer is the toughest one of all. But I’m fighting very hard and I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “I’m right there by Leo’s side all the way for this fight. For the first fight for Frampton (in July 2016), I had to try to prepare Leo from a distance.”

“I’m not worried about the decision in the first fight. I think he landed the clearer punches but it was definitely a close fight. I was happy with my performance as far as pleasing the crowd. I’ve moved on to the rematch. I’m going to make adjustments and get the win.”

Abner Mares

Leo Santa Cruz lost that fight and his belt by majority decision in a classic fight of the year contender and then regained the title (with his father returning to the corner) by split decision over Frampton in his next fight in January 2017.

“This fight [against Mares] is different [from the first Frampton fight] because I’m right there every step of the way. I’m telling him what to do and guide him every day,” Jose Santa Cruz said. “I think Leo is even more prepared this time than for the first fight with Mares. Leo is doing great mentally because he’s such a brave kid. I tell him not to worry about me and to keep working hard. He seems really motivated right now. He knows he’s doing well.

“Right now we’re working on maintaining speed, being smart and not looking for too much of a clash of a fight. I know Leo can win with his speed and his brain. He’s learning and growing as a fighter. I think Mares has reached his peak. Robert Garcia is a great trainer, but at a certain point, there’s nothing the fighter can do to surprise anyone.”

Mares has worked with Garcia for his past two fights, and they have also had plenty of time in the gym to work together. Garcia thinks he can make a big difference for Mares in the sequel.

“I was there live for the first fight, and it was a great matchup. I knew then that Abner was much better than the fight he gave that night,” Garcia said. “He left the fans happy, which is all that matters to him. But with me in the corner, it should be a different fight. I think the fans have seen what we’ve done with Abner for his last two fights and they know that it’s going to lead to a totally different outcome in this fight.”
