Klopp need to Fix Salah before Champions League Final

News, sports

Former Tottenham midfielder and current Match of the Day pundit Jermain Jenas last night revealed his opinion that Liverpool need Mohamed Salah to rediscover his form quickly, following the Egyptian’s disappointing showing versus Chelsea yesterday evening.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head at Stamford Bridge, in a crucial fixture in the race for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham’s shock loss to West Brom on Saturday afternoon meant that Chelsea would close the gap on their London rivals to just 2 points with a win, while such a result would also leave Liverpool just a solitary point clear of Spurs.

1-0

The early exchanges in London yesterday saw Liverpool well on top, with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino both going close for the Reds over the course of the opening half-hour.

However, it was Chelsea who opened the scoring, through January signing Olivier Giroud, after the Frenchman did brilliantly to nod home a dinked cross from Victor Moses with 32 minutes on the clock.

Result

And that was all she wrote in terms of goalscoring at the Bridge, with an uncharacteristically quiet second 45 from Liverpool’s attacking stars having eventually seen Chelsea emerge with a deserved, and potentially crucial 1-0 win.

Concerning

Of the Reds’ attacking trio, Sadio Mane looked the most lively throughout proceedings at Stamford Bridge, with Mohamed Salah having looked some way short of his best once again.

The African wide-man, who has of course enjoyed a historic season to this point, has struggled to make any real impact in Liverpool’s last 3 fixtures, with large sections of the club’s fans having expressed their concerns with the form and fitness of their side’s star man following yesterday’s defeat.

And Jermain Jenas echoed these concerns when analysing the performance of Salah versus Chelsea on Match of the Day last night, with the former English international having explained:

‘When they did get into good positions around the box, Salah had one of the worst games I think he has had in a Liverpool shirt.’

‘He is entitled to have a bad game given the season he has had, but Liverpool need to fix this quickly because they have got two of the most important games of their whole season coming up.’

Sadio Mane is clearly a big fan of Liverpool target Nabil FekirCristiano Ronaldo’s Liverpool injury update after Barcelona

Jose Mourinho Blames Chelsea For Selling Liverpool Star Mohamed Salah – And Says The Blues Lied About His Departure

Mo Salah was sold by Chelsea after a failed two-year spell at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has laid the blame squarely at Chelsea’s door for selling Mo Salah in 2016.

The Egyptian star left Stamford Bridge under Mourinho’s reign after a failed two-year spell.

But the Manchester United boss insists he didn’t make the decision to sell Salah, who has lit up Europe this season with 43 goals for Champions League chasing Liverpool.

Jose Mourinho said Chelsea are to blame for selling Mo Salah in 2016

Salah left Chelsea for Roma in 2016 before the Reds brought him for £40million last summer.

Mourinho told ESPN Brazil: “People say that I was the one that sold Salah and it is the opposite.

“I was the one that bought Salah. I was the one that told Chelsea to buy Salah.

“But he came as a young kid, physically he was not ready, mentally he was not ready, socially and culturally he was lost and everything was tough for him.

“We decided to put him on loan and he asked for that as well.

“Chelsea decided to sell him, OK?

Mo Salah has forced his way into Ballon d'Or contention with his stunning performances for Liverpool this season

“And when they say that I was the one that sold him it is a lie.

“I agreed to send him on loan, I thought it was necessary, I thought that Chelsea had wingers.

“Some of them are still there like Willian, [Eden] Hazard and all those players already in a different level.”

Mourinho added: “But effectively I did buy Salah, I didn’t sell Salah, but it doesn’t matter.

“What matters is that he is a fantastic player, and I am really happy for everything that is happening for him and especially because he scores against everyone and he didn’t score against us in two games.”

Wembley sold: What does it mean for England, Tottenham, Chelsea and the NFL? — The Sun

via Wembley sold: What does it mean for England, Tottenham, Chelsea and the NFL? — The Sun

When could the sale be done?

The FA Board only received details of Shahid Khan’s offer this morning and the process will take weeks and possibly months. In the short-term, nothing will alter.

Will things change swiftly?

The FA Cup Final next month will still be played at Wembley, as will England’s World Cup warm-up game with Nigeria on June 2.

The FA have already scheduled the November 15 friendly with the USA for the National Stadium but have yet to confirm the venue for the September friendly with Switzerland or the home games against Spain and Croatia in the new Nations league that starts in September.

What does it mean?

Wembley chief executive Martin Glenn believes the proposed deal is a game-changer for English football, releasing funding for grass roots development that would otherwise be inconceivable.

The endowment fund for future grass roots projects will bring £500m into the development of the game at all levels, allowing better facilities, more coaches and opening up more opportunities for girls and women to play.

Are we going to get “McDonald’s Wembley”?

The FA have demanded that Khan agrees the ground remains known as “Wembley Stadium”, at least for now.

That suggests naming rights are not immediately on the agenda, although it keeps alive the possibility of “Wembley Stadium, sponsored by Panasonic” or whomever.

Will the FA Cup Final be moved away from Wembley?

Absolutely not. Khan is keen to ensure the marquee events held at the ground will continue to be staged there.

That includes the FA Cup Final and presumably the EFL Cup Final and play-off finals, as well as the majority of England home games.

But it could see the semi-finals reverting to “neutral grounds” like Old Trafford, the Emirates or Villa Park in the future, preserving Wembley for the Final.

One factor against that is that only Wembley can house 90,000 supporters.

Does this mean an NFL franchise in London?

It certainly looks that way, especially as the FA are preparing to send the England team “on the road” round the country for the autumn games if fixtures clash with Jaguars home games in the NFL schedule.

Khan will presumably have already have consulted with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about his plans but any relocation of the franchise would still need to be approved by a vote of the 32 NFL team owners.

Taking a franchise out of the USA for the first time will be a big and controversial call, although it would open up the entire European market given the easy transport links to London.

But aren’t the NFL moving to Tottenham?

The NFL have certainly funded part of the cost of the new Spurs stadium at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy signed a 10-year deal to play two NFL matches per season at the new stadium last year, separate NFL-sized dressing rooms are being built in the East Stand of the 62,000-capacity ground and the grass pitch will be rolled out to allow NFL matches (and concerts) to take place on the artificial turf below.

March 2007
Work is finally completed at total cost around £1billion – over twice the £458m price quoted. Multiplex make £150m losses, later suing engineering consultants.

May 2007
Football returns to Wembley after almost seven years. Didier Drogba’s extra-time winner gives Chelsea 1-0 victory over Manchester United in FA Cup final.

Whether this means more games in London in addition to Jacksonville’s home matches is less clear but Levy will have signed a deal with cast-iron financial guarantees.

What about Chelsea – aren’t they going to move to Wembley?

Wembley was certainly the most likely option for the Blues as they embark on the £1billion-plus revamp of Stamford Bridge, although that is now now expected to start until at least the 2019-20 season, if not a year later.

Chelsea need to find a home for four seasons but the demands of the NFL fixtures from September through to the end of December – and beyond if the Jags secured home advantage for the play-offs – would appear to scupper that possibility, adding problems for Roman Abramovich and his board to overcome.

Allardyce wants Aubameyang for Everton

There’s a new boss at Goodison Park, and his first move is to find a replacement for departed frontman Romelu Lukaku. Sam Allardyce has taken the reins over at Everton, and, according to the Mirror, his first move will be to make a bold £60 million move to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over from Borussia Dortmund next summer.

Lukaku took his 25 goals from 2016-17 to Manchester United during the latest window, and so far, the combination of Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn’t managed to make up for the loss of the Belgium international.

33

A woeful start to the campaign saw manager Ronald Koeman sacked, and now Allardyce, whose Toffees sit mid-table after some recent positive results, is already looking to next season and a goals influx in the form of Aubameyang.

The Gabon international already has 19 goals in all competitions for Dortmund, but Everton won’t have it easy, as Liverpool and Chelsea are also rumoured to be interestedin making Aubameyang’s Premier League dream come true.

Tap-ins

– The Daily Mail says a recurrence of a leg injury for Schalke’s Leon Goretzka has caused Manchester United to back off a mooted January move for the Germany international.

– Germany international striker Sandro Wagner is closing in on a return to his boyhood club Bayern Munich, according to Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann.

– Midfielder Juan David Cabezas will remain with the Houston Dynamo after the club secured his full transfer from Deportivo Cali on Thursday, the team has announced.

According to the latest reports from Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, Juventus will relieve Massimiliano Allegri of his duties should they fail to win the Scudetto this season.

Last night’s 1-0 defeat at home to Napoli leaves the Bianconeri just a single point ahead of the Partenopei, hence their chances of securing a seventh consecutive league title are at serious risk.

Indeed, the Tuscan tactician is set to meet with his superiors in the coming weeks to discuss whether they intend to continue their working relationship. However, fresh doubts over his future at the club have surfaced in the wake of a hugely underwhelming performance against Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Meanwhile, the former Cagliari and AC Milan boss remains a managerial target for Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea. Their respective hierarchies will surely be encouraged by the mounting speculation over his future in Turin.

Manchester United vs Chelsea

Who will win the 2017-18 FA Cup final?

Following the weekend’s matches, Man United will take on Chelsea in the showpiece at Wembley on May 19.

Of course, many will dub this the ‘Jose Mourinho final’. Prior to joining Man United, Mourinho had two spells in charge of Chelsea.

Yet the final will also be a tribute to Ray Wilkins, who also played for Chelsea and Man United in his playing days.

The Red Devils beat Spurs 2-1 in their semifinal, while Chelsea beat Southampton 2-0.

Jose Mourinho fears being ‘killed’

How much pressure is there on Jose Mourinho to win the FA Cup final?

In the Times on Monday, fresh quotes from United’s boss reveals the stress he’s under to win a trophy again this season:

When I don’t win [a trophy] you kill me. Because I almost do that all the time, when I don’t do it you kill me, which you are ready to do if I don’t win the final.

Last season Man United won the League Cup and the Europa League.

Would winning the FA Cup and finishing second in the Premier League signal a successful season for Mourinho at the Theatre of Dreams?

Man United’s summer recruitment

Mourinho has also given more information about how Man United may act in the summer transfer market.

While the Special One admits United will make signings, he’s warned supporters not to expect massive spending this summer:

We are going to invest the basic to improve our squad. We need to find a replacement for Michael Carrick; if Marouane Fellaini leaves we need to find a replacement for him; and there is always in a squad, a player or a couple of players that are not playing a lot and will try to leave.

So we will touch our squad and believe that rather than spend, spend, spend, it is [about] the evolution of our players.

We have some young players that need to get with both hands opportunities for their evolution.

Victor Moses’ second-half strike against Burnley has seen him leapfrog Alex Iwobi to be Premier League’s highest-scoring Nigerian this season.

The Nigeria international, who returned to Chelsea’s starting XI after making a cameo appearance in the Blues’ 3-2 victory at Southampton, struck in the 69th minute at Turf Moor, his third this season and 20th in England’s top flight.

That strike moves Moses ahead of and fellow Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi, who has hit two goals in the Premier League during this term.

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho is third with just one goal with four games to the end of the season.

Iheanacho was the highest-scoring Nigerian last season with four goals, while Moses, Iwobi and Victor Anichebe got three apiece.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni leads the all-time chart with 95 goals AS Nwankwo Kanu (54) and Efan Ekoku (52) are second and third respectively.

‘Victor was the star man’ – Conte heaps praise on Chelsea hero Moses

Moses received special commendations from his manager after his goal and assist helped the Blues get a victory at Turf Moor

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte lauded an awe-inspiring performance from Victor Moses after his side’s Premier League victory against Burnley.

The 27-year-old capped a beautiful display with an assist and a goal as the Blues cruised to a 2-1 win in Conte’s 100th match in charge of Chelsea in all competitions.

Burnley looked set to claim a point thanks to Ashley Barnes’ leveler after Kevin Long had turned in Moses’ cross in the first-half.

However, it was the Nigeria international – a threat down the right all game – who had the final say by thumping in a low drive that beat birthday boy Nick Pope.

Pique wants Barcelona to sign Marcos Alonso from Chelsea

News, sports

marco.jpgPique tells Barcelona chiefs to sign Marco Alonso – Real Madrid have also been linked to the Chelsea star – Alonso has been in consistent form for Conte’s side Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has told the club to sign Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso in the summer, Don Balon reports. The 27-year-old has been instrumental for Chelsea following his move from Serie A side Fiorentina in 2016. The Spain international was part of Antonio Conte’s side that won the Premier League title last term and has impressed this season despite Chelsea’s poor title defence.

Don Balon claimed Pique has urged Barca’s transfer chiefs to complete a deal for the Chelsea defender this summer. The Spanish media outlet also added that Real Madrid have also been linked to land the Stamford Bridge left-back and Pique is desperate for Barca to beat their arch-rivals to Alonso. With current left-back, Jordi Alba the number one choice for Ernesto Valverde, Pique feels Alonso would provide competition for places at the Nou Camp. Alonso will be back in action for Chelsea when the Blues travel to Turf Moore to play Burnley who defeated the Blues at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season. Conte’s men still stand an outside chance of securing Champions League football for next season if Liverpool and Tottenham drop points. Roman Abramovic’s team will play Southampton in the semi finals of the FA Cup and could either meet Manchester United or Tottenham in the finals.

EPL: Giroud helps Chelsea secure comeback win over Southampton

Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score two goals on Saturday as Chelsea came from behind to beat Southampton 2-3 in their Premier League clash at Saint Marys.

Southampton who are yet to win any Premier League game on home soil in 2018 looked like they were going to get it right against the Blues.

The home side had already raced to a two-goal lead before Antonio Conte moved to take out Alvaro Morata for Giroud.

That proved to be a wise descion as Chelsea scored three times in the space of eight minutes to turn the game on its head.

Giroud netted on either side of a goal from Eden Hazard.

The result means that Southampton remain inside the Premier league relegation zone while Chelsea stay fifth in the division – six points clear of sixth-placed Arsenal.

Nigeria international Victor Moses was given a cameo role in Saturday’s early kickoff in the Premier League; replacing Hazard in the 86th minute.
