The New York Giants stuck to their plan and drafted Saquon Barkley at No. 2 overall. Will it pay off with immediate impact?

Over the next week, our panel of ESPN NFL Insiders will break down the 2018 draftclass, starting with their picks for which team will get the most from their rookies.

Which team’s rookie class will be the most impactful in 2018?

Matt Bowen, NFL writer: Chicago Bears. It starts with linebacker Roquan Smith. He’s a blue-chip talent with the speed and natural instincts to find the ball. Great fit for Vic Fangio’s defense. Up front, Iowa center/offensive guard James Daniels has the athleticism and pro-ready technique to compete for a starting job. And wide receiverAnthony Miller should find a role as a slot target for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The quicks are there and so is the playmaking ability.

Dan Graziano, national NFL writer: Cleveland Browns. Is there any team that needs an impact from its rookie class more than the one that’s 1-31 over the last two seasons? We don’t know when No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield will take over as the starter, but it’s a safe bet it’ll happen at some point this season. They’ll give No. 4 pick Denzel Wardsignificant opportunity right away as a starting cornerback. And second-rounders Nick Chubb and Austin Corbett should help the run game. Opportunities abound in Cleveland, for rookies and everyone else.

Mina Kimes, senior writer: Denver Broncos. I’m a big fan of the Cowboys’ draft class as well, but I think Denver’s first three picks — defensive end Bradley Chubb, wide receiverCourtland Sutton, and running back Royce Freeman — could all become immediate contributors. Sutton, a big-bodied receiver from SMU, stands out as a potential red-zone threat for Case Keenum.

Mike Sando, senior NFL writer: New England Patriots. Other teams’ rookies will play more snaps and earn greater honors. As for impact? New England could emerge with a starting left tackle (Isaiah Wynn), a rotational running back (Sony Michel) and perhaps aDanny Amendola-replacement (Braxton Berrios) on a championship-caliber team.

Aaron Schatz, editor-in-chief of Football Outsiders: Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There’s opportunity on the depth chart. Vita Vea slides right into the starting defensive line next to Gerald McCoy. Ronald Jones II should slide right into the starting running back spot. And given the weakness at cornerback and the age of their No. 1 CB Brent Grimes, who turns 35 in July, second-rounders M.J. Stewart and Carlton Davis could play a larger role than expected early.

coltsKevin Seifert, national NFL writer: Indianapolis Colts. It won’t be as flashy as some other classes, but the addition of two guards and two defensive linemen among the first 64 picks will significantly enhance the Colts’ long-standing trench weakness. GuardQuenton Nelson, especially, will give the Colts a much better chance of keeping their most prized asset — quarterback Andrew Luck — upright.

Field Yates, NFL Insider: New York Giants. Here’s the bottom line: a single player can dramatically impact the perception of a team’s collective draft class. Along those lines, no player is better equipped to contribute immediately — factored in his own ability plus the opportunity ahead — than Saquon Barkley. Beyond that, second-rounder Will Hernandez projects as a Day 1 starter. Should Barkley produce (and I expect a massive rookie season), it will be a positive reflection on the offensive line, as well.

Arsenal attackers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were all smiles on Sunday as they enjoyed a late night celebrating the Gunners’ 5-0 win over Burnley.

Gabon striker Aubameyang scored twice, assisting another, during the emphatic home win which marked the final home game for Arsene Wenger before he departs the club this summer.

Taking to Instagram late on Sunday, Aubameyang posted a photo with his ‘brother’ Mkhitaryan as the pair cut relaxed figures away from the pitch.

The Gabon striker scored twice on Sunday to mark a fitting home finale for Arsene Wenger

The pressure was on Arsenal’s players to provide Wenger with a fitting send off following their disappointing Europa League semi-final exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Thursday.

But Aubameyang, who played no part at the Wanda Metropolitano due to being ineligible, got the party started after 14 minutes with a neat finish.

Burnley, who secured European football after Everton’s failure to beat Southampton on Saturday evening, offered little resistance to rewrite the Emirates script as they went on to be hit for five.

Alexandre Lacazette, Sead Kolasinac and Alex Iwobi added to Aubameyang’s brace on the day.

Trips to Leicester City and Huddersfield Town will round off Wenger’s 22-year spell in charge of Arsenal but few will forget the atmosphere, emotion and performance of his final game at the Emirates.

ST. LOUIS – Dexter Fowler hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning to help the St. Louis Cardinals finish a weekend sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 4-3 win on Sunday night.

The victory was the Cardinals’ fifth straight, matching their season-best winning streak. It also improved St. Louis to 4-1 on the season against the rival Cubs, a year after Chicago won 14 of the 19 games between the two.

After Chicago took a 3-2 lead on Javier Baez’s solo shot in the top of the 14th, Luke Farrell (1-2) struck out the first two Cardinals batters he faced before allowing an infield single to Harrison Bader. Fowler then lifted a 2-2 pitch down the right-field line and just over the glove of Chicago outfielder Jason Heyward.

Mike Mayers (1-0) earned the win in relief for St. Louis, allowing one run in three innings.

The loss was the season-high fifth straight for Chicago, the team’s worst losing stretch since a six-game skid in late May last season.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)- An $18 bet paid off in a huge way for an Austin woman Saturday at Retama Park race track in Selma, Texas.

Margaret Reid walked away with a cool $1.2 million when Justify won the Kentucky Derby, reports CBS San Antonio affiliate KENS-TV.

Reid, who has been going to Retama for years with her friends, told the station, “It was an amazing feeling, yes, that you won a really big, like a really big ticket. A mini-lotto if you will.”

Reid won a “pick five,” in which you have to pick the winner of five races in a row. That fifth race happened to be the Kentucky Derby.

“It was a big ticket because it was a couple of long shots in the middle of it,” said Reid.

The track posted congratulations on Facebook.

Like many at the track, Reid did her homework to figure out her carefully-placed bet. “I understand the program and I can break down the races. It doesn’t always work out, but sometimes it does,” she said.

What will Reid do with her newfound wealth?

She says she’ll treat herself to a vacation but also be smart about it.

“I’ll invest some of it. Obviously. I have a young daughter that’s going to be going to college in three years, so some of it will go there,” Reid said.

Robert Pires has urged his former club Arsenal to attempt to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United.
France international Martial joined the Red Devils in 2015, becoming the most expensive teenager in history when he left Monaco for a fee of over £50million.
The 22-year-old has struggled to live up to his price-tag, however, failing to nail down a place in United’s team under Jose Mourinho.

Steven Gerrard replaces Graeme Murty as the new manager of Rangers

Steven Gerrard will be announced as Rangers’ new manager on Friday afternoon.

The former Liverpool midfielder, 37, will replace Graeme Murty, who was placed in interim charge following the October sacking of Pedro Caixinha.

Gerrard, who leaves his role as a youth coach at Anfield to move north, captained the Reds and England during a glittering playing career.

He made 710 appearances and won nine trophies for Liverpool over 19 years.

He also won 114 England caps and captained the national team at three of the six major tournaments at which he played.

Gerrard retired in 2016 and joined the youth set-up at Anfield after rejecting an offer to become manager of MK Dons.

Manchester United have reportedly moved to the head of the queue to sign Lazio‘s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Barcelona cooled their interest due to his €80 million (£70 million) price tag.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via MailOnline’s Robert Cottingham), Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is eager to add two more midfielders to his squad over the summer, and United sent scouts to cast their eye over Milinkovic-Savic last month.

The Serbian has a number of other suitors including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, but United are now said to be leading the race as Barca have balked at Lazio’s hefty asking price.

Milinkovic-Savic, 23, has been a key part of the Lazio first team for the last three seasons and is enjoying a successful 2017-18 campaign.

In Serie A this term he has netted 11 goals and provided three assists in 32 appearances from his central midfield role.

He is able to operate as a No. 10, particularly in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but his preferred position is in the middle of the park, perhaps in a 4-3-3 system, where he can contribute both in defence and attack.

Along with his fantastic technique, passing range, ball control and maturity, he is also a physically imposing player and threatening in the air, per WhoScored.com:

United are one of few clubs who boast the financial clout to meet Lazio’s asking price, and Milinkovic-Savic has previously labelled Mourinho as “the best manager in the world,” per Sky Sport Italia (via Football Italia).

United are not short on options in midfield. But Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic are more defensive minded in the middle of the park, Michael Carrick will be retiring at the end of the season and Marouane Fellainicould depart Old Trafford as his contract expires in the summer.

The prospect of Milinkovic-Savic playing alongside Paul Pogba in United’s midfield is an exciting one for Red Devils fans, and it could yet become a reality if Barca have pulled out of the running for the Serbia international.

Cubs Have Rough Outing At Wrigley

sports

https://wp.me/p1wIwG-9h1m.

Rockies 3, Cubs 1

That was a tough game. Anthony Rizzo‘s leadoff home run couldn’t boost momentum for the Cubs after Kyle Hendricks watched back to back home runs soar into the stands. The Cubs took one on the chin last night 3-1

“It was all there and I felt good about it,” Joe Maddon said of having Rizzo in the leadoff spot. “We weren’t striking out, we were moving the ball. Gray got better, game in progress. He seemed to get sharper. The thing he did well today from the side was first-pitch breaking-ball strike, whether it was his slider or curve. It was uncanny getting the call on that pitch. That was the separator for me. Whenever you get a starter who continually throws his breaking-ball pitch [for] strike one, it really sets them up after that.”

The calls weren’t spectacular. I’m a little bit biased when it comes to Kyle Hendricks and there were quite a few calls that went unnoticed. Even after Hendricks gave up the home runs, he settled in and went deep into the game, which I think, if you’re not having a solid game, it’s great to settle down and get back to the basics.

“It was a bad pitch to Blackmon — I didn’t want to walk him — and the wrong pitch to Dahl but not a bad one,” Hendricks said. “Overall, I felt really good about [the outing]. The fastball command was good. I got quick outs, went deep into the game. I’ve got to take the positives from that one.”

Hey, didn’t Rizzo look awesome in the leadoff spot? Last year he joked that he was the best leadoff hitter in the game because he kept blasting the ball out there.

“I really thought we needed something like a 20-foot python, a magician or a break dancer in the clubhouse,” Maddon said of his reasoning. “Instead, I chose to hit Rizzo leadoff. I thought it might pick the boys up a little bit.”

Why not? Every Cubs fan appreciates the inventiveness and creativity of the outgoing manager. Sometimes, baseball can get methodical and if there’s no rule about doing something different, then Maddon will find it, try it out and if it doesn’t work, then it doesn’t work.

“Leading off is leading off — you’re the first hitter in the game, you come up a lot, and I want all the at-bats I can get,” Rizzo said.

Lionel Messi ‘Didn’t Turn Up’ as Barcelona Exit Prompts Ernesto Valverde Apology

News, sports

mess
Lionel Messi has been criticised in the wake of Barcelona’s shock 3-0 defeat at the hands of Roma on Tuesday, while Barca manager Ernesto Valverde and president Josep Maria Bartomeu have apologised to supporters.
The Giallorossi produced an outstanding performance at the Stadio Olimpico to overturn a 4-1 deficit from the first leg, ensuring the Blaugrana’s exit at the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League for the third season running.
Barca’s players have come in for a great deal of criticism for their showing in Rome, and Messi is no exception.
AS‘ Juan Jimenez described the Argentinian as being “anonymous” and said he had “gone out there to watch the time go by,” concluding that he “simply didn’t turn up.”

Messi and Luis Suarez were also singled out by BT Sport pundit Michael Owen, who believed they did not do enough to help out defensively.

FILIPPO MONTEFORTE/Getty Images
“I’m not sure you can not concede when you’ve got two strikers that don’t put anything into defending,” he said, per MailOnline’s Robert Summerscales. “They are basically defending with eight outfield players against 11, and I’m not sure you can do that at the highest level.”
Neither of the pair had a night to remember in a match in which a single Barcelona goal would have all-but guaranteed their progression, and with Radja Nainggolan, Daniele De Rossi and Kevin Strootman often overwhelming the visitors’ midfield, the extra bodies could have lightened their team-mates’ load.
Jimenez’s criticism of Messi is perhaps a little unfair, though, as he was involved throughout—according to Summerscales he had 61 touches of the ball, just six fewer than the commanding De Rossi managed, per Squawka Football—and frequently had to drop deeper to create for the team with Andres Iniesta struggling to do so himself.
Grup 14’s Rafael Hernandez believes the Argentinian was let down by his team-mates, a sentiment echoed by ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan:
Rafael Hernández @RafaelH117 The only thing holding back Lionel Messi is Barcelona. Unbelievable.
Dermot Corrigan @dermotmcorrigan Point about Messi not scoring whenever Barca go out of CL not that he never does it on big occasion – more that if he doesnt step up then nobody else has.
Barcelona’s decline in recent years has often been masked by their impressive ability to continue to pick up silverware each season—something Messi should take plenty of credit for—but they’re perhaps no longer the force they once were on the pitch and rely too heavily on their talisman.

Their failure to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League since their win in 2015 demonstrates as much, and prompted apologies from both Bartomeu and Valverde.
Per Sport‘s Victor Vallespir, the former said it was a “sad day” for the club and added: “The message is that we’re sorry for all Barca fans around the world.”
According to Ivan San Antonio of the same outlet, Valverde had a similar message: “We’re sorry for them, for the disappointment.”
The coach also lay the failure at his own feet: “Absolutely. The coach is the one who has to take responsibility. [The coach] chooses the team, the changes, he plans the game, the season. So I am absolutely responsible for everything.”
ESPN’s David Cartlidge also believed Valverde made mistakes in his approach:
David Cartlidge @davidjaca Think Valverde is a magnificent coach and sacking him would be absurd, but he’s got caught in the headlights tonight. Had a panic. Or as it is sometimes known, an Emery, and resorted to negativity/caution over taking initiative.
He has done an excellent job overall at the Camp Nou; his side—despite being far from a vintage outfit—are in the Copa del Rey final and are seven matches away from going the season unbeaten in La Liga, which they’re set to win comfortably.
His lack of top-level experience showed on Tuesday, though, and the team’s European hopes will therefore have to be put on hold for another year at least.

Houston, we don’t have a problem.

I’ll let Kevin walk you through the particulars and the nitty-gritty from last night, but there seemed to be this mild collective panic on Twitter, and I would imagine all the anti-LeBron process goons are hastily reconfiguring their stances. Mitigating factors:

Six days off is a long time, especially against a team playing every other night and fresh off game 7 heroics. The Sixers looked flat, they weren’t getting elevation on their jumpers, their defensive intensity resembled a practice tilt, and they clearly spent more time trying to work through whatever their preparations were while Boston, which had less than two days to prepare, just played. The only thing that worries me is an additional two days before Game 2. That will serve the Celtics much more than it will the Sixers, and quite honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Sixers lost Game 2 as well… before coming home and then rattling off four straight wins to take it in six once they hit their stride and Boston runs out of gas.

Three-point shooting: The Sixers shot 5-26 from three, and the Celtics were 17-35. Yes, not all shots are created equal. Take, for example, this Al Horford three:

But the point remains: Even a small reversion to the mean – with the Sixers shooting their regular season average from three and the Celtics shooting theirs – would’ve ended this game 110-105, Sixers.

Terry Rozier. Unsustainable. He’s a ball of energy, and last night he thrust himself upon a Sixers team that had been playing itself for the last week. Shame on the Sixers for not being ready and appearing almost lazy on defense, but that’s not their identity.

Other notes:

I think people hate Ben Simmons. He gets under opposing players’ skin more than any player I can recall. His body language just exudes go fuck yourself. Is there a little bit of jealousy there? You bet. Did that 60 Minutes Australia piece suck and not tell us anything new? You bet. Is someone going to club Simmons live on the court because they can’t take his demeanor and I’m so much better than you shtick? Probably. If there’s ever a player who’s going to get jumped on the court, it’s Simmons.

The Markelle Fultz memes are plentiful. This Tweet stung:

For the foreseeable future, I’m going to provide all Markelle Fultz commentary through the lens of my wife, who doesnt’ really watch basketball but occasionally pops in when the game is on. Last night, after I explained to her about the whole Jayson Tatum thing, she calmly said, “Well, what I have seen of Fultz, he just doesn’t look confident. He’s scared. Even I can see it and I don’t watch basketball.” No surprise. The thing with Fultz – who it feels unfair to pick on since he didn’t play – is that he sailed through the draft process as the consensus number one pick and it seems no one… except for Danny Ainge… raised a red flag with regard to his psyche. None of us know him, he rarely talks to the media, and the Sixers will tell you he is a great kid who is trying, but it’s highly uninspiring when you see his peers perform at such a high level with him sitting on the sidelines looking like a little kid. He may turn out to be just fine, or great even, but it’s concerning that he can’t even crack the lineup when his team sorely needs some scoring pop when the shots aren’t falling. He is effectively out of the rotation, which has to be nearly unprecedented for a number one pick who played in college.

Still, we all knew Jayson Tatum was the most NBA-ready player in the draft. While he’s surpassing expectations, this isn’t surprising. Drafting Fultz was more about two years from now. So while it sucks that he’s a total non-factor right now, if he get outs of his own head and remembers how to shoot, he could become an elite third wheel on a perennial championship contender. The draft should not be judged on this season’s results, as hard as it is to sit here and watch as Tatum destroys the world.

He’s a rookie! Neat chant, assholes. Is there anything more predictable than us repurposing it for Ben Simmons in Games 3 and 4?

I really need Robert Kraft away from the Sixers. Here he is with Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck. That’s Michael Rubin a few seats down. Kraft and Rubin are friends, and before the game Kraft was shown hugging Joel Embiid. Despite this, Kraft was visibly cheering for the Celtics. And yet, Rubin, during a CNBC appearance earlier this year, explained that he was rooting for the Patriots in the Super Bowl (despite being from Philly and owning a team here!) because he’s such good friends with Kraft. So how does Kraft return the favor? By cheering against him. Rubin’s courtside game took a hit here. Ban Kraft from The Center.

As I stadium tunnel geek, I found this very cool:

HARRISBURG (KDKA) – After an independent review of the case, Attorney General Josh Shapiro wants the court system to allow the case of a Penn State University pledge’s hazing-related death to go to trial.

He also plans to file charges tomorrow against 12 additional fraternity members.

Shaprio said he wants justice for Timothy Piazza and his family.

piazza Pa. AG: 12 More Fraternity Members To Be Charged In PSU Pledges Death

Piazza died after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol and falling down the steps at a Beta Theta Pi pledge event.

Shapiro said he and his legal team took three key factors into account when reviewing the case:

  • The people who planned and participated the so-called “gauntlet,” or drinking event.
  • Who knew about Piazza’s fall?
  • Why they didn’t seek medical attention for him.

“We are committed to holding every responsible individual accountable for their actions in this tragedy consistent with Pennsylvania law and evidence in this case,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro also said he plans to work to protect college students all over the state by supporting anti-hazing legislation currently making its way through Harrisburg.

The wait for this year’s Kentucky Derby is nearly over, as the grounds of Churchill Downs in Louisville will soon be filled to the brim with horse racing fanatics to enjoy the most exciting two minutes in sports in person.
For many spectators watching, the Kentucky Derby is a thrilling viewing experience. For others, it’s so much more. With bets being placed left and right, the odds for this year’s derby have been monitored closely, and for good reason.
As of Monday night, the favorite to win the first leg of the Triple Crown is Bob Baffert’s horse named Justify, who has been the favorite among oddsmakers since the opening line was released.

But after Justify, it’s a bit of a crapshoot to find another clear-cut contender who could upset the field.

Favorite: Justify

Eclipse Sportswire/Getty Images
If you didn’t know and have been living under a rock for the past week, much of the talk surrounding the Derby and Justify has centered around the Apollo Curse.
Since 1882, no horse has won the Kentucky Derby without starting a race as a two-year-old since Apollo. Justify, now three years old, shouldn’t worry too much about other horses of the past, as he’s coming into this year’s Run for the Roses in great form.
Justify has won on all three of his starts in his young career, including an impressive three-length victory over fellow Derby contender Bolt d’Oro in the Santa Anita Derby last month.
At plus-300 (bet $10 to win $30), the favorite is clear. Don’t let the Apollo Curse turn you away from the closest thing to a sure bet in this year’s Derby.

Underdog to Watch: Noble Indy

Eclipse Sportswire/Getty Images
Why bet on the underdog when he’s unlikely to win? The odds, ladies and gentlemen. Never ignore the odds.

At plus-2000, Noble Indy is stuck in the middle of the pack, according to oddsmakers, but is going under the radar for no real reason at all. The three-year-old colt is a Todd Pletcher trained horse that knows how to ride, as the evidence has shown during his week of preparation for the Derby.
The Louisiana Derby winner timed in at one minute, 1.6 seconds over five furlongs earlier this week during a practice session, per PaulickReport.com.
It’s a long shot, but that’s the whole point of wagering a bet, isn’t it? If you’re not putting your hard earned money on Justify at plus-300, Mendelssohn at plus-400 or Audible at plus-650, take a chance at Noble Indy. He just might be the dark horse of this Derby after all.

That puts the Argentine on 64 points, two clear of Salah, who failed to score in their 0-0 draw with Stoke City on Saturday.

Messi, who won last season’s European Golden Boot having scored 37 times to finish with a total of 74 points, is now in pole position for another individual title.

He has four league games remaining while Salah has two.

In third place is Lazio’s Ciro Immobile, just two goals behind Salah and three behind Messi; the Italian has three Serie A games remaining to make up the deficit.

Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is in fourth (28 goals, 56 points), while PSG’s Edinson Cavani and Inter’s Mauro Icardi have 27 goals (54 points). Tottenham striker Harry Kane is in seventh with 26 goals (52 points).

If Messi stays ahead of Salah, it would make him the first player to win the European Golden Shoe five times (2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2016/17).

Mancini, 53, will reportedly begin his new job before the friendly against Saudi Arabia on May 28.

Carlo Ancelotti is said to have turned down the national job so he can be considered for a top job in Europe.

Mancini last night told RAI state radio: “There has not been contact with the [Italian football] federation but, for a coach, the Italian national team would be a source of honour and prestige.”

Giampiero Ventura was sacked as Italy manager in November after failing to qualify for the World Cup.

The north is unprepared for an escalation with Iran, should it occur, said MK Amir Peretz (Zionist Union), who served as minister of defense during the Second Lebanon War, on Tuesday. Israel’s main problem, he added, is Iran trying to “incite threats in Syrian territory.”

“A central point is that in the North, we are not prepared from the perspective of defending the home front, we have a lot to do,” he told Army Radio. “We have to invest close to NIS 2 billion so that we will be prepared on the northern front.”

In March, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman made similar comments, saying, “If we want fortifications in the North, there must be a multi-year plan of one billion shekels a year. This is the minimum to bring the north to the level of the south.”

Peretz also discussed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s revelation of secret nuclear activity in Iran last night, noting necessary changes that would need to be made to the 2015 accord.

“What do we want to achieve in changes to the nuclear deal? Do we want to cancel the agreement now or do we want to make significant changes that will also extend the period that prevents Iran from dealing with nuclear weapons?” he queried.

“And most importantly,” he said, we have “to try to get clauses that forbid [Iran] from continuing to arm the terror organizations in our region because our main problem with Iran is that it itself is trying to incite threats in Syrian territory.”

United States President Donald Trump said he will likely remove the US from the deal if it is not “fixed” by May 12th, a deadline by which he must sign waivers in order to continue the country’s involvement in the deal.

Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri has added fuel to the rumours he could be set for a move to Chelsea by admitting his frustration with Juventus‘ ongoing dominance of Serie A.

He talked up the Premier League’s recent changing roster of champions—Manchester United were the last team to successfully defend the title in 2009—and warned of the risk in Italy of fans getting turned off, per Neil McLeman in the Mirror:

The only hope is that, in life, everything has to end sometime. Sooner or later, the domination will end. I must say, seeing the Premier League have this constant alternation of winners every year, it grows the love for teams and makes everyone have hope of success.

“It’s a different situation here in Italy. The risk is that we’ll lose many fans, because they cheer on teams that will never win and they know that too well. If we impoverish the whole system, then the rich will be impoverished too.

Massimiliano Allegri’s Juve look set to win their seventh consecutive Serie A title this season after Napoli’s impressive challenge faltered on Sunday.

Following Juve’s fightback from 2-1 down to a 3-2 victory against Inter Milan in the Derby d’Italia on Saturday, Napoli had to beat Fiorentina to move back to within a point of the Turin giants.

However, Kalidou Koulibaly—match-winner the week before against Juve—was sent off after just six minutes at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, and the Partenopei were soundly beaten 3-0.

It means Sarri’s side are now four points behind Juve with three games of the season remaining and, although the Old Lady still have to travel to in-form Roma, their other two remaining fixtures are winnable home games against Bologna and Hellas Verona.

After losing in Florence, it looks like Sarri is going to fall just short in his attempt to break Juve’s stranglehold.

And, having been in charge at the Stadio San Paolo since 2015, it has been reported that the 59-year-old will now look to move to pastures new.

Stu Forster/Getty Images

According to the Partenopei‘s official radio station, Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (h/t Football Italia), Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is eyeing Sarri to fill the manager’s role at Stamford Bridge, and current Blues boss Antonio Conte could move the other way.

Certainly Sarri’s latest comments suggest he would be open to a new opportunity elsewhere, and he could be a fine replacement for Conte given how impressive he has been at Napoli with limited resources.

Braves 10, Phillies 1: Ozzie Albies led off the game with his ninth homer of the year, doubled in a run and Ronald Acuña went 2-for-3 with an RBI double himself — it should’ve been a triple but he fell down rounding second — reaching base four times. The 1-2 punch at the top of the Braves order is both exciting and young, their combined ages less than Bartolo Colon‘s 44 years. They had help from a Johan Camargo three-run homer. He’s 24 so I suppose the Braves have some old men contributing as well. Brandon McCarthy allowed one run while pitching into the sixth. McCarthy is 34. He has to feel positively ancient on this club. I’m sure no one cares, though, as the Braves have won four of five.
Royals 5, White Sox 4: Cheslor Cuthbert homered twice and drove in four runs. No word if Sal Perez was OK with how he carried himself on his trots or if he should be “excited” given that Cuthbert has never been in a playoff game, but something tells me Perez would be OK with cartwheels and back handsprings given that it’s his teammate.
Cubs 2, Brewers 0: There are, like, 47 “Tylers” in baseball right now and likely more on the way given the naming conventions of the mid-to-late 1990s, but only one Tyler — Chatwood, of the Cubs –tossed seven, two-hit shutout innings yesterday and singled in a run to help his own cause. I guess we almost had two Tyler shutouts, what with Mahle for the Reds pitching well too, but we only had one. I’m guessing we stand a decent shot of having multiple Tyler shutouts on one day soon. At least as long as no Taylors or Zacks or Bradens or Hunters or whatever break ’em up with homers.
Mets 14, Padres 2: Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in five as he returned to Petco Park and his home town. Padres fans booed him when he pinch hit on Saturday, which is about as dumb a thing as I can imagine. Dude was the biggest star the Padres have had in he post Tony Gwynn-era and he didn’t choose to leave. He was traded. One of the guys he was traded for was Anthony Rizzo, by the way, and then the Padres traded him away too. Maybe Padres fans should boo their front office. Anyway, the Mets batted around in both the seventh and eighth innings, scoring five runs each frame. Zack Wheeler struck out nine in five innings and enjoyed a 14 runs and 19 hits of support.
Orioles 5, Tigers 3: Moderate power dudes over 30 who are defensive liabilities are all but extinct in Major League Baseball these days, but if you look in the undergrowth of the big league rain forest you can still see some out there, struggling for survival but still exhibiting the same characteristics from back when they flourished. You see stuff like Pedro Alvarez hitting two homers and getting starts at third base, as he did yesterday. Life finds a way.
Red Sox 4, Rays 3: Sandy Leon hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, J.D. Martinez had four hits and drove in two and Craig Kimbrel worked out of trouble in an inning and a third of work to help the Red Sox snap the Rays’ eight-game winning streak. Denard Span had a two-run homer in the loss.
Blue Jays 7, Rangers 2: Kevin Pillar Teoscar Hernandez and Yangervis Solarte homered to help the Jays avoid being swept. Randal Grichuk helped too, with this:
He freakin’ fell, but still controlled his body enough to be in the position to catch that ball and, with a little luck at the end, brought it in without even seeing it. Unbelievable.
Mariners 10, Indians 4: Ryon Healey hit two homers and drove in four and Robinson Cano and Mitch Haniger went deep too in this rout. Cano’s bomb was his 100th as a Mariner. The M’s won three of four in the series and hit ten homers in all. Healey had three himself.
Marlins 3, Rockies 0: Caleb Smith twirled seven innings of two-hit shutout ball, striking out nine for his first big league win. Miguel Rojas homered and Lewis Brinson singled in a run. Only nine runs total were scored in this three-game series, with the Rockies scoring only two and notching only fifteen hits.
Nationals 3, Diamondbacks 1: Gio Gonzalez struck out eight over seven innings as the Nats avoid a sweep. Worse for the Dbacks than the loss was losing starter Robbie Ray to a strained oblique muscle. He’ll have an MRI today but the disabled list is waiting. The Dbacks did manage to win their ninth straight series to start the season with their wins on Friday and Saturday, and that’s pretty cool.
Pirates 5, Cardinals 0: Pirates starter Nick Kingham made his major league debut in this one and all he did was take a perfect game into the seventh. He ended having giving up just the single which broke up the perfecto, walked no one and struck out nine on 98 pitches. This was supposed to be a spot start due the Pirates playing a double header last week. I suppose we’ll see about that. The Pirates swept the Cards and won their fifth straight.
Reds 8, Twins 2: Tyler Mahle was impressive for the second time in a row, allowing one run over six and a third and striking out seven while Jose Peraza had three hits and Adam Duvall homered. The Reds took two of three from the Twins, giving them their first series win of the year.
Astros 8, Athletics 4: Gerrit Cole continues to be impressive as all get-out for Houston, striking out 12 in six and two-thirds innings of work. It was the fourth time in six starts this year that he has struck out 10 or more batters. He only had six double-digit strikeout performances in his five previous seasons combined. George Springer and Jose Altuve each drove in two. The A’s committed four errors on the day, including two in the bottom of the seventh which helped Houston take the lead for good.
Giants 4, Dodgers 2: Ty Blach outpitched Kenta Maeda, backed with Evan Longoria‘s three-run homer and a Brandon Belt RBI double. Cody Bellinger was benched for dogging it and the Dodgers dropped three of four to the Giants. It’s been a bad early go of it for the men in blue this year. They have a four-game set against the Dbacks starting today. It’s time to shake off the cobwebs and realize that preseason predictions and last season performance have no bearing on the standings once the season begins.
Yankees 2, Angels 1: Gary Sanchez hit a massive two-run dong and that was all CC Sabathia needed in support, as he twirled seven innings of one-run ball. The Yankees have won nine in a row.

Why I Will Not Marry Nigerian Woman – Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr

Entertainment, News, sports

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr has given reasons he will not marry a Nigerian woman. Unlike former Nigerian manager, Clemens Westerhof got hooked to a Zimbabwean lady during his sojourn in Africa, Rohr, when asked in an interview with the Sun if he would consider marrying a Nigerian lady, said it would be difficult.
He cited cultural background and language difference as main reasons he won’t marry a Nigerian.
Rohr, a Franco-German replaced former Nigerian international, Sunday Oliseh as Super Eagles coach.
Asked if he would likely take a second wife in Nigeria just as Clemens Westerhof did in Africa, he said, “My president (Amaju Pinnick) joked about it recently.
“He said he was going to hand me a Nigerian woman and we all laughed about it.
“To be sincere, Nigerian ladies are very beautiful and tempting but it is going to be very difficult to marry one. Language and cultural background will be a serious barrier.”

FA disciplinary beaks are expected to refer Salah’s clash with Stoke’s Bruno Martins Indi during Saturday’s goalless draw at Anfield to the three-man panel of ex-referees to rule if it was a red card offence.

The FA have been alerted to social media clips of the incident, in which the Egyptian superstar appears to flail a balled hand at Stoke’s Dutch defender near the half-way line.

Referee Andre Marriner did not spot the incident, which took place just before half-time.

Under FA rules, potential violent conduct incidents missed by the officials are referred to the panel of former whistlers, who must unanimously agree it was a sending off.

Last week, West Brom’s Ahmed Hegazi avoided action when the three former refs – who view all referred incident separately – failed to agree he should have received a red card for an alleged punch on Liverpool’s Danny Ings.

Salah will discover in the next 24 hours if he faces a violent conduct charge, which would bring with it an automatic three-game ban ruling him out of the rest of the domestic campaign and the first game of next term.
