Let’s give Cardi B a minute

Analysis by Lisa Respers France, CNN

(CNN) Before you tweet me asking, “Why is Cardi B’s marital split news?” I will beat you to the punch and say it’s not, really.Cardi shot to the top of Twitter trends Wednesday after she announced her split from husband and fellow rapper Offset on Instagram.

I’m shocked by how shocked peo

ple are that Cardi B and Offset broke up— bilal (@ziadehb) December 5, 2018

Sad to hear Cardi B has split from Offset. I genuinely thought that one was going to work out.— FIGHTING POLYGON TEAM (@connorarose) December 5, 2018

Yall really cant sit here and tell me you could handle Cardi B for more than 20 minutes. Imagine hearing that voice every time you woke up lol Offset should get a Nobel peace prize for making it this long https://t.co/SnuHsfFSf1— 🇺🇸 Trev 🇿🇦 (@trevcannon) December 5, 2018

Celebrity couples who eventual break up is almost a given these days, unless they are in the rarefied air of a few. (You have the power to destroy us Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, so please keep hanging in there.)Cardi has earned her right to grieve the end of her year-long marriage in private, should she so choose. But given Offset’s success as a member of the rap group Migos and Cardi’s rapid rise as a solo artist, interest is understandable.”There’s been a lot of good and bad in Cardi B’s personal life this year,” Jason Lipshutz, editorial director at Billboard told CNN. “I don’t think it diminishes from the fact she’s had one of the biggest breakthrough years in hip-hop history and in recent popular music memory.”As the first female MC to top the Billboard 100 in almost 20 years, (Lauryn Hill last did it in 1998 with “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”) and the first woman to chart their first three entries in the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs’ Top 10 simultaneously, it would seem like Cardi has worked hard enough to earn a pass on the mountain of speculation that is sure to come in the wake of her marriage.

An unlikely career

This is a woman who has already beaten the odds on so many levels.Belcalis Almanzar (Cardi’s birth name) took the Cinderella story of a stripper who hits the big time and flipped it on its head. She defied the Hollywood trope of the stripper waiting for a knight in shining armor to take her off the pole. Cardi did it herself, through shear determination. She first came to fame on the VH1 reality series “Love & Hip Hop: New York.”The future star was loud, combative and in your face about everything — from her exotic dancing to her then imprisoned boyfriend, identified only as “Tommy” on the show.In other words, authentically Cardi B.Who is Cardi B?She was far from polished, which is one of the things viewers loved — and continue to love — about her.In one memorable scene from Season 6 of “Love & Hip Hop: New York,” tensions between Cardi and the girlfriend of a fellow cast member boiled over and resulted in Cardi uttering one of the show’s most memorable lines.

Hart said he chose not to issue the apology and step down instead, saying he did not want to contribute to “feeding the internet trolls.””The reason why I passed is because I’ve addressed this several times,” Hart said. “I’m not going to continue to go back and tap into the days of old when I’ve moved on and I’m in a completely different space in my life.”Chad Griffin, the head of an LGBT civil rights advocacy group called the Human Rights Campaign, responded to Hart on Twitter.”You have a rare opportunity to take responsibility, teach people in this moment, & send a message to LGBTQ youth that they matter & deserve dignity & respect. You say you’ve grown. Show us. Make amends for hurtful things you’ve said & affirm LGBTQ people,” Griffin said.

CNN has reached out to Hart’s team and the Academy for a response.

Doctor Who Illegally Prescribed Prince Painkillers Before Overdose Pays $30,000 Settlement

(MINNEAPOLIS) — A Minnesota doctor accused of illegally prescribing an opioid painkiller for Prince a week before the musician died from a fentanyl overdose has agreed to pay $30,000 to settle a federal civil violation, according to documents made public Thursday.

The settlement between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and Dr. Michael Todd Schulenberg comes as state prosecutors prepared to announce Thursday morning whether they’ll file any criminal charges stemming from their two-year investigation into Prince’s death.

Schulenberg is not currently a target of any criminal investigation, federal prosecutors said in a letter to his attorney. His attorney, Amy Conners, released a statement Thursday saying “there have been no allegations made by the Government that Dr. Schulenberg had any role in Prince’s death.”

Prince was 57 when he was found alone and unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate on April 21, 2016. An autopsy found he died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more powerful than heroin. State and federal authorities have been investigating the source of the fentanyl for nearly two years, and no one has been criminally charged.

But federal prosecutors and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration alleged Schulenberg, a family physician who saw Prince twice before he died, violated the Controlled Substances Act when he wrote a prescription in the name of someone else on April 14, 2016.

The settlement, dated Monday, does not name Prince or make any references to the Prince investigation — but search warrants previously released say Schulenberg told authorities he prescribed oxycodone to Prince on April 14 and put it under the name of Prince’s bodyguard and close friend, Kirk Johnson, “for Prince’s privacy.” Schulenberg’s attorney disputed that, saying Schulenberg did not prescribe opiates to any patient with the intent that they go to Prince.

“After he learned of Prince’s addiction, he immediately worked to refer Prince to a treatment facility and to transfer care to a chemical dependency specialist,” Conners said.

She said Schulenberg decided to settle to avoid the expense, delay, and unknown outcome of litigation, and that “he made no admission of facts nor liability and denies any such liability.”

Oxycodone, the generic name for the active ingredient in OxyContin, was not listed as a cause of Prince’s death. But it is part of a family of painkillers driving the nation’s overdose and addiction epidemic, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 2 million Americans abused or were addicted to prescription opioids, including oxycodone, in 2014.

A laboratory report obtained by The Associated Press notes that one of the pills found in a prescription bottle in Paisley Park that bore Johnson’s name tested positive for oxycodone.

Under the settlement, Schulenberg has 30 days to pay $30,000 to the U.S. government. He also agreed to stricter requirements for logging and reporting his prescriptions of controlled substances for two years. Among them, he must keep detailed logs of all controlled substances he prescribes, allow the DEA to inspect the logs and other records without prior notice, and allow the DEA access to his prescribing history on demand.

It’s illegal for a doctor to write a prescription for someone under another person’s name. Anyone convicted of doing so could lose their DEA registration — meaning they could no longer prescribe controlled substances — and could face discipline from their state medical board.

The settlement says the DEA won’t revoke Schulenberg’s registration, unless he does not comply. It’s unclear whether the state medical board will take action. His license is currently active and he has no disciplinary action against him.

A confidential toxicology report obtained by The Associated Press in March showed high concentrations of fentanyl in the singer’s blood, liver and stomach. The concentration of fentanyl in Prince’s blood alone was 67.8 micrograms per liter, which outside experts called “exceedingly high.”

Prince did not have a prescription for fentanyl. Search warrants unsealed about a year after he died showed that authorities searched his home, cellphone records of associates and his email accounts to try to determine how he got the drug. Authorities found numerous pills in various containers stashed around Prince’s home, including some counterfeit pills that contained fentanyl.

While many who knew Prince over the years said he had a reputation for clean living, some said he also struggled with pain after years of performing at an intense level. Documents unsealed last year paint a picture of a man struggling with an addiction to prescription opioids and withdrawal, and they also show there were efforts to get him help.

Associates at Paisley Park told investigators that Prince was recently “going through withdrawals, which are believed to be the result of the abuse of prescription medication,” according to an affidavit.

Just six days before he died, Prince passed out on a plane, and an emergency stop was made in Moline, Illinois. The musician had to be revived with two doses of a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

The day before his death, Paisley Park staffers contacted California addiction specialist Dr. Howard Kornfeld as they were trying to get Prince help. Kornfeld sent his son, Andrew, to Minnesota that night, and the younger Kornfeld was among those who found Prince’s body. Andrew Kornfeld was carrying buprenorphine, a medication that can be used to help treat opioid addiction.

Bon Jovi reunited with former members onstage Saturday night to celebrate their admission into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, as the late icon Nina Simone and other nominees made up this year’s induction class.

Bon Jovi was the first band to take the stage in Cleveland’s Public Auditorium, USA Today reported. Band members Jon Bon Jovi, David Bryan and Tico Torres reunited with former bandmates Richie Sambora and Alec John.

Jon Bon Jovi gave a 20-minute-long speech onstage, which he said he had been writing for years.

“I’ve been writing this speech since I first strummed a broom and sang at the top of the stairs of my childhood home,” he said, according to the paper. “I’ve actually written it many ways, many times. Some days I write a thank you speech and other days, I write a (expletive)-you speech.”

Sambora, who left the New Jersey band in 2013, and Alec John Such, who left in 1994, embraced their former bandmates with a hug after each one spoke onstage to accept the honor. They performed together, singing crowd favorites like “Livin’ on a Prayer,” ”You Give Love a Bad Name” and “It’s My Life.”

Sambora thanked his fans and bandmates, the paper reported.

Once again, The Monkees are nowhere to be found.

“Songs are very profound in a way, because you’re connecting with humanity,” he said. “Everybody’s more alike than they are (different), and especially now in today’s world, that’s really important.”

Simone, who died in 2003, was welcomed into the Rock Hall in a groundbreaking way from performers who she has deeply inspired, from Lauryn Hill and Andra Day to Mary J. Blige.

Hill stretched her voice and sang in French, in honor of Simone’s music, which earned her a standing ovation from the crowd. Day, a Grammy-nominated R&B singer, hit high notes that also earned her applause. Both women exceptionally displayed their powerhouse voices.

Blige inducted Simone, calling the singer “bold, strong, feisty and fearless.”

“Her voice was so distinctive and powerful and I never heard anything like it,” the R&B superstar said.

Simone was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys. Her brother, Sam Waymon, accepted the honor on his sister’s behalf.

The 33rd annual Rock Hall ceremony kicked off with a tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October at age 66.

The Killers earned a loud applause from the audience when they started performing “American Girl,” then transitioned to “Free Fallin’.”

The Cars and four first-time nominees, including Simone, Dire Straits, the Moody Blues and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, make up the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class.

The ceremony didn’t end this year with the group jam session of the induction class that has become Rock Hall tradition, USA Today reported.

Instead, inductees the Moody Blues ended the night as the last act. Rock Hall voters have recently opened their hearts to progressive rockers, which benefited the “Nights in White Satin” singers.

Howard Stern inducted this year’s class, telling jokes along the way, including one about Rock Hall co-founder Jann Wenner, questioning why he was qualified to vote on who enters the hall.

Stern said the Rolling Stone magazine founder doesn’t play any instruments “but he did start a great magazine … and now it’s the size of a pamphlet.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Meek Mill Tells Lester Holt He Always Thought His Probation Would Bring Him Back to Prison

international News, Music, personality, song

Mills.jpgMeek Mill has been involved in a lengthy court battle after being imprisoned for violation of probation late last year. On Thursday (April 12), NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt will air the rapper’s latest interview — conducted via phone call — in which he discusses how his arrest on drug and weapon charges a decade ago has impacted his life.

“Can you believe that 10 years in, 10 years on probation that you are still in the clutches of the criminal justice system because of this one arrest?” asked Lester Holt in a clip of the interview.

While Mill — born Robert Rihmeek Williams — says he didn’t initially believe he would be on probation for so long, he admitted that the length of probation was a sign that he would likely return to prison.

“It was always a thought in the back of my mind that 10 years of probation would bring me back to prison because a technical violation is police contact,” he said.

Mill went on to clarify his situation and explain how the law was not in his favor.

“You don’t have to be charged with a crime, you don’t have to be found guilty of a crime, you can be sentenced to what you were sentenced for, like what I was facing,” he told Holt.

Despite his conviction, Mill has remained active. Earlier this week, he shared a video for his 2017 track “1942 Flows.” The most recent update to Mill’s case involves a motion to the Supreme Court for his release on bail.

Mariah Carey reveals she’s battling bipolar disorder

mariah22Mariah Carey reveals she’s battling bipolar disorder.

Mariah Carey, an American R&B singer, says she is battling bipolar disorder.

The singer revealed to People that she was first diagnosed with the mental illness in 2001 but “didn’t want to believe it”.

Some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder include depression, insomnia, sudden mood swings, irritability, and hyperactivity.

Carey says she is now in therapy and getting treatment for the disorder.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she told the magazine.

“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love – writing songs and making music.

“I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important,”

In 2014, Carey separated from ex-husband and rapper, Nick Cannon. Their marriage produced twins, Moroccan and Monroe.

In January 2016, she announced her engagement to Joseph Parker but nine months later, the relationship hit a snag.

Carey is currently working on her 15th studio album.
