Atiku Reacts To President Buhari’s “Nigerian Youths Are Not Ready To Work” Comment

atikueFormer president Atiku Abubakar reacted via his Twitter handle to President Muhammadu Buhari reported comment that many Nigerian youths are uneducated, not ready to work and dependent on revenue from oil to survive.

He said the youths, who make up 60 per cent of the population, were waiting to get social amenities free without doing anything. The President spoke during a panel discussion at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster, London.

“I will never refer to Nigeria’s youth as people who sit and do nothing. They are hardworking. I should know, I have thousands of youths working for me all over the country who have been the backbone to our success. he tweeted.

I’ve always said oil is not Nigeria’s greatest asset. Our greatest asset is our youth who created Nollywood out of nothing and an entertainment industry that is second to none in Africa.

Our youth are charting new frontiers; creating a huge tech industry on their own! Their entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic, and creative abilities are things of pride and should be applauded, encouraged and nurtured.

The senate has summoned Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, and Godwin Emiefele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), over the alleged withdrawal of $462 million from the federation account without approval of the national assembly.

Also summoned to give reasons for the said withdrawal is Mansur Dan-Ali, minister of defence.

The upper legislative chamber summoned the trio after Sam Anyawu, a senator from Imo state, raised a motion at plenary on Tuesday.

Anyanwu drew the attention of his colleagues to the alleged withdrawal of the money.

He made reference to section 80 (2) and (3) of the 1999 constitution which prohibits such withdrawal without the consent of the lawmakers.

“I have it on good authority that in March 2018, a whopping sum of $462 million was withdrawn from the federation account and paid for helicopters to an American firm called Helicopter Tecno Fights Helicopters,” he said, adding: “And I know there was no such approval from the senate.”

Police attack Shiites members during Free Zakzaky campaign in Kaduna and Sokoto states

Police attack Shiites members during Free Zakzaky campaign in Kaduna and Sokoto states

At least one person was killed and over 30 injured as protesting Shiites were dispersed by security operatives in Abuja on Monday, the Islamic group has stated.

The Shiites spokesperson, Ibrahim Musa, said the victim was yet to be identified as “the protesters came from various towns.”

Mr Mohammed also stated that over 200 protesters were arrested by the police, who he accused of being the first to attack the protesters.

“We were carrying out a peaceful protest starting from the Unity Fountain. All of a sudden, they began to attack us. They were the ones who started firing (at) us with teargas.

“We were not violent in our procession but we had to defend ourselves somehow and that was why we attacked back.

“So far, we’ve been able to confirm about 200 persons arrested, over 30 injured and one person is dead,”

The protesters took to the Unity Fountain, beside Transcorp Hotel to demand the release of the leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who has been detained without trial for over two years.

The Nigerian government has kept the Shiite leader in custody since 2015 when his group had an encounter with a convoy of the Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai, leading to the massacre of about 300 Shiite members, including Mr El-Zakzaky’s sons.

Several security officers from the army, police as well as civil defence on Monday forcefully dispersed the protesters as eyewitnesses said the officers fired teargas and gun shots into the air.

Videos and footages have also been released by eyewitnesses showing the dispersal of the protesters and some of them throwing stones at police vehicles.

Monday’s action came a few days after the the Abuja police commissioner, Sadiq Bello, placed an indefinite ban on daily sit-outs at Unity Fountain by pro-democracy and good governance advocates across Abuja, a move that was condemned by activists.

Mr Bello maintained they took the decision because he sees the the groups, including the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ movement, as public “nuisance.”

“All of them are in the same category, they’re disrupting people’s activities and infringing on their human rights by blocking the roads and other things. They’re constituting a nuisance” the commissioner told PREMIUM TIMES by telephone Friday night.

The Shiites spokesperson, however, vowed not to relent until their leader is released.

“We are demanding the release of our leader and we are going to continue our peaceful protest. If they attack us, no problem. We will continue with our protest. Tomorrow, insha Allah, we are coming out to continue the protest,” he said.

When contacted, the Abuja police spokesperson, Manzah Anjuguri, said the police would soon release a statement on the incident.

Vice-President, International Development of MedShare, Nell Diallo, disclosed this at the Nigeria Day at Atlanta to celebrate MedShare 20 years of strengthening healthcare in Nigeria.

Ms Diallo said: “MedShare has supported over 150 hospitals in Nigeria and improved maternal and child health, primary care and infectious disease control and prevention in Nigeria’s healthcare facilities.

“MedShare has donated more than $40 million in medical supplies and biomedical equipment to strengthen Nigeria’s health systems.

“Our Biomedical Equipment Training and Repair Service has donated more than 4,500 pieces of state-of-the-art biomedical equipment and more than 1,050 electric hospital beds.”

According to her, MedShare focuses on the 19 Northern states because there are more cases of inadequate medical access and healthcare facilities in those states.

All the 19 Northern state governments and the Federal Capital Territory have benefitted from the charity organisation while southern states beneficiaries include Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Enugu and Abia states.

The beneficiary hospitals are the Ahmadu Bello University, Enugu State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Lagos State University, and Jos University Teaching Hospitals as well as the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospitals.

“The flags that you see here, these are the countries we ship to. The country that has received the largest number and percentage of container is this one – Nigeria – and we ship to 100 countries.

“We receive our kinds of equipment and supplies; we do not accept any materials that cannot be used in the U.S. and we use the World Health Organisation’s standard for accepting donations to go to underserved countries.

“If you look at our warehouse here, it’s 40,000 square feet. We have another warehouse that’s 55,000 (square feet) in San Francisco and a 10,000 square feet warehouse in New Jersey.

“And at any given time, we have roughly $25 million worth of materials that’s ready to be shipped and we load containers every week.”

Charles Redding, President and Chief Executive Officer of MedShare, said he was very pleased that Nigeria was one of its long-standing partners that it looked to strengthen healthcare system around the world.

Mr Redding said: “And I say that with the recognition that Nigeria is a very large country thus the need is very large.

“So if we look at collectively, the impact we’ve had around the world with our shipment of medical supplies and equipment, Nigeria has received the most of those shipments.

“We can certainly estimate that we’ve touched the lives of over two million Nigerians over the last 20 years.

“So we are very proud of the partnership, the openness and the community to want to work with us and to support our ongoing efforts to improve healthcare facilities around the world.”

MedShare is a Medical Surplus Recovery Organisation that collects and distributes surplus medical products to qualified healthcare facilities in medically-underserved communities around the world on an on-going basis.

The Atlanta-based organisation, was named a ‘Four Star Charity’ for the 13th consecutive year by Charity Navigator.

This designation recognises the top one per cent of U.S. charities based on the criteria of transparency, organisational accountability, and measurable impact.

Mr Redding said MedShare, currently in its 20th year of operations, has collected over 207 million dollars worth of lifesaving medical supplies and equipment that has helped over 19 million patients in over 100 countries and territories.

The module for receiving $350,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment involves the sponsorship of $25,000 for shipping logistics.

Redding advised Nigerian state governors and other well-meaning individuals to take advantage of the opportunity to offset their health budgets and facilitate the equipping of Nigerian hospitals through MedShare.

The event was attended by Nigeria’s Consul-General in Atlanta, Kayode Laro; his wife, Innocent Iwejuo; Consul, Information and Economics, representatives of Nigerian community organisations in the U.S. and members of the Nigerian diaspora. (NAN)

Magu Running EFCC on gossips, marabouts advice – DSS DG, Daura

The Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Lawan Daura, has accused the Acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, of running the anti-graft agency based on gossips and political interference from certain quarters and marabouts.

Daura said this before the Senate ad-hoc committee, adding that the method, which he described as ‘brawn instead of brain’, deployed by EFCC under Magu, is a Gestapo style that belongs to dictatorial regimes.

“The Acting Chairman runs the Agency based on public rumours, manoeuvres, gossips, political interference from certain quarters and marabouts.”

Daura also accused Magu of vendetta mission against the DSS as a result of the indictment of his close friend, retired Air Commodore Mohammed Umar, who was involved in extorting money from suspects under investigation by the Presidential Committee Investigating Defence Procurement between 2014 and 2015.

He said although the EFCC has the power to investigate financial crimes, but investigation of the finances of the DSS was an exception in this case and can only be waived with the approval of the President.

The report of the ad-hoc committee, sighted by The Eagle Online, said: “The extant law regulating the Service prohibits it from the commission’s kind of investigation without a presidential order.

“It was suggested to him to call EFCC Board meeting to thrash it out or to secure such presidential order.

“The service also advised appropriate authorities to set up a Presidential Committee in the manner that the Tower/NIA money was investigated.”

In the report, Magu was indicted on several grounds.

Big Brother Naija Day 75: The Rico Aftershocks!!!

The Rico Aftershocks!!!

Rico.3jpgAll Housemates except Cee-C admitted to missing Rico Swavey. Anto had noticed that his departure had affected some more than others, and wished him well. For Tobi, Rico had played safe and thought highly of Rico.

Tobi was the first to admit he missed him the most in the kitchen. Khloe had the hardest time since she missed having someone to talk to at nights, and had nobody to fight with when she was tipsy. In Miracle’s view, Rico’s humour was sorely missed but again he felt lucky to have learned a few dishes from him. For Alex, though Rico’s goofiness was missed, there hadn’t been any food fights since he left.

The biggest blow came from Cee-C, according to whom, people didn’t talk about Rico at all. Worse, despite everybody acknowledging Tobi and Miracle for stepping into Rico’s chef shoes, in Cee-C’s eyes, nobody had gone into the kitchen to cook for all. Nobody except Anto whom she praised for making burgers.  Perhaps Lolu’s analysis that many saw in Rico a big threat was proven right?

NEMA in N1.6bn contracts fraud mess

Africa, APC, Corruption, local news, PMB, Politics

Nema

A N1.6 billion contract fraud involving the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been discovered by the House of Representatives committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness.

The committee during an investigative hearing on violation of public trust in NEMA, said it discovered that the agency spent N1.6 billon on contract awards to companies that have no tax clearance and other precondition qualifications as stipulated by the Nigerian laws.

The Federal Government had in July 2017 released the money to the agency for relief intervention to flood victims in 16 states. NEMA claimed the money had been expended on contracts awarded to 216 companies.

However, the Reps committee, at the investigative hearing which was presided over by the deputy chairman of the committee, Ali Isa, said that reports by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) showed that NEMA not only violated the law on tax but also committed other contraventions in the award of contracts to the 216 companies.

According to separate reports by FIRS, ITF and PENCOM, the Director General (DG) of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, failed to undertake a thorough and financial regulations on the companies to find out their qualifications and their status before awarding multi-million Naira contracts to them.

NEMA management was also indicted for breaching the Public Procurement Act 2007 in the ways and manners the contracts were awarded, apart from the tax laws offences.

Although the DG presented a Certificate of No Objection obtained from the Bureau Of Public Procurement (BPP) to prove that all due process procedures were followed before the contracts were awarded, however, the committee members rejected it, explaining that there are documents that clearly show the breaches in question whose authenticity have not been contested, and therefore, the BPP must have cleared the contracts in error.

In another revelation, it was discovered that the governing council of NEMA, installed on April 3, on the same day suspended six directors said to have opposed the manner the NEMA DG was awarding contracts in breach of due process.

NEMA DG had argued that the report of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recommended the suspension of the officers.

Meanwhile, the DG, who like the suspended directors was facing investigation, was left out of the suspension in the purported EFCC’s report.

2019 elections: Mass defection looms in APC

2019 Elections, Africa, local news, personality, PMB, Politics

SarakiAs reactions continue to trail Monday’s declaration by President Muhammadu Buhari that he would seek re-election in the 2019 general elections, there are indications that some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would dump the ruling party ahead of the polls.

The looming defection, New Telegraph learnt, is because the President’s confirmation of his second term bid has foreclosed the ambitions of some APC chieftains also eyeing the party’s presidential ticket.

A party source, who disclosed this to our correspondent, said the presidential hopefuls, mostly outgoing governors of northern extraction and top ranking federal lawmakers, have to look elsewhere to realise their respective ambitions.

New Telegraph, April 12, 2018
