Phillies MLR 5/10/18: Roman Quinn is back! — iPhillySports

Phillies Minor League Roundup for 5/10/18

Weekend Probables:

LHV: Jacob Waguespack, Cole Irvin, TBD
REA: Elniery Garcia, Ranger Suarez, TBD
CLR: Sixto Sanchez, Bailey Falter
LWD: Damon Jones, TBD, TBD

Lehigh Valley 6, Buffalo 5

Tom Eshelman – 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR, 8 GB, 3 FB
Mitch Walding – 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K (fielding error)
Dylan Cozens – 0 for 3, BB, K
Andrew Pullin – 0 for 4, R, K
Roman Quinn – 0 for 0, R, SB

It’s been a tough go for Eshelman in the early season. He has 4 starts in which he has given up just 3 earned runs (though most of the time barely etching out 5 innings), 1 start giving up 4 runs and 2 starts where he gave up a 6-spot. Eshelman is walking a lot of batters (14 in 36.2 IP), which is uncharacteristic for the guy with near-elite command of his pitches. Let’s give it some more time before we get worried. Mitch Walding ripped his 5th HR of the season, a 2-run shot in the 1st inning. The IronPigs won in dramatic fashion, scoring a run in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game for the walk-off win. Logan Moore worked a lead-off walk, which gave way for Roman Quinn (!!!) to pinch run for him. All Quinn did was steal second base, reach third after tagging up on a fly ball and then scoring the winning run via a sac-fly. Quinn hadn’t played since May 6th because of a sore tendon in his hand. His stolen base was his 12th this season.

Altoona 5, Reading 4

Franklyn Kilome – 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, WP, HBP, 6 GB, 3 FB
Zach Coppola – 1 for 1, 2 BB, 3 SB (fielding error)
Malquin Canelo – 0 for 3, RBI, K
Damek Tomscha – 0 for 3, R, BB, K
Zach Green – 0 for 3, R, BB
Jan Hernandez – 1 for 4, R, 2B, RBI, K
Cornelius Randolph – 2 for 4, 2 RBI (fielding error)
Deivi Grullon – 0 for 4
Jiandido Tromp – 0 for 2, BB, K

Not an ideal way to follow up a great start in his previous outing for Franklyn Kilome. It was his second time in his last 3 starts in which he has given up 5 earned runs. Kilome will get a few more months before I think the Phillies need to make a decision on whether his future will be coming out of the bullpen. He has two above average pitches, but the command issues still persist. Zach Coppola stole bases 8, 9 and 10 in the game (though it appears he left the game early as he was replaced as a pinch hitter). Reading falls to 11-18 with the loss.

Dayton 5, Clearwater 3 (10 innings)

Mauricio Llovera – 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, HR, 3 GB, 3 FB (fielding & pickoff errors)
Arquimedes Gamboa – 0 for 5, 2 K
Adam Haseley – 2 for 4, 2 R, BB, K, SB
Austin Listi – 2 for 5, R, 2B, RBI, K
Darick Hall – 0 for 3, RBI, BB
Mickey Moniak – 1 for 4, RBI, K
Henri Lartigue – 0 for 3, K
Jose Pujols – 0 for 4, K
Raul Rivas – 0 for 3, BB, SB
Luke Williams – 0 for 4

Mauricio Llovera gives up a season-high 3 earned runs last night. I say that because Llovera has been really, really good. He has a 2.30 ERA and has only given up 21 hits, 12 walks and struck out 33 batters in 27.1 innings. Outfielder turned reliever Aaron Brown was the loser in this one. Adam Haseley gets a multi-hit game, his first since May 1st. His stolen base was his 4th of the season.

Lakewood 2, Charleston 1

Spencer Howard – 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 7 K, 5 GB, 2 FB
Jake Scheiner – 1 for 3, HR, BB
Danie Brito – 1 for 4, K, CS
Dalton Guthrie – 0 for 3, K
Quincy Nieporte – 0 for 3, 2 K
Gregori Rivero – 2 for 3, HR, K
Rodolfo Duran – 1 for 3
Josh Stephen – 1 for 3
Yahir Gurrola – 0 for 3
Kevin Markham – 0 for 3, K

Have I mentioned previously that Lakewood’s pitching has been outstanding? Spencer Howard improves to 3-2 and lowers his ERA to 2.89. He has 39 strikeouts to just 5 walks in 28 innings this season. His 12.5 K/9 is best in the entire Phillies minor league system among starters. Jake Scheiner (4) and Gregori Rivero (2) both go yard on solo bombs. Thankfully that’s all the offense that Howard and the bullpen would need in the game.
