‘How did Bayern not go through?’ – Twitter reacts to stunning Champions League semi-final tie
Fans have taken to Twitter in their numbers to react to the thrilling clash clash between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich this evening.
The two sides went head to head at the Bernabeu in the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final tie, with Real having held a 2-1 advantage from last week’s first-leg at the Allianz Arena.
Goals from Marcelo and Marco Asensio cancelled out Joshua Kimmich’s early strike last Wednesday, with Real having no doubt been confident of their chances of advancing to yet another European final thanks to their two crucial away goals.

The early exchanges of this evening’s clash saw the tie sparked into life, as a whipped cross from the right caused havoc in the Real box, with Sergio Ramos’ dreadful attempted clearance having landed at the feet of Joshua Kimmich, who smashed home into the far corner to notch his second goal of the tie.
However, it was 1-1 just 8 minutes later, as a wonderful piece of control and subsequent cross from Marcelo allowed the lively Karim Benzema to nod home at the back-post.
Bayern went on to dominate the vast majority of the opening 45 minutes, with the formation opted for by Zinedine Zidane having seen full-backs Marcelo and Lucas Vazquez badly exposed on numerous occasions.
Back in front
But hosts Real (somehow) managed to hold on until half-time, with the beginning of the second 45 having seen their resistance pay off in a major way.
Los Merengues took the lead with less than a minute gone following the interval, when a shocking piece of goalkeeping from Sven Ulreich saw the German realise at the last second that he was about to pick up a back-pass, before swinging out a leg and completely missing the ball, allowing Karim Benzema to breeze past for the simplest finish of his career:

However, Bayern set up an absolutely nail-biting final half-hour when James Rodriguez was quickest to react after his own blocked shot landed kindly in front of the onrushing Keylor Navas, with Rodriguez sliding a perfect finish underneath the body of the Costa Rican to make it 2-2 on the night.
‘What a game’
But, despite dominating not only this evening, but over the two legs, Real, in the end, held out, advancing to face either Roma or Liverpool courtesy of a 4-3 aggregate win.
Fans have since taken to social media in absolute numbers to discuss tonight’s stunning clash in the Spanish capital, with many simply pondering how Bayern weren’t the team to go through:
How Unlucky were Bayern not to go through to the final by far the best team over the 2 legs incredible how Real hang on in the end #UCL

On that evidence, Liverpool have done well to swerve Bayern if they go through.
How Real Madrid do it year on year is a mystery!

Others, though, simply wanted to praise both sides for an absolutely stunning clash, despite the result:

Just an amazing game.
Half the Bayern players are in tears, and I’m not surprised. That was a gargantuan effort by both sides, and what sides they are. A real clash of the titans, but the biggest club in the world are in the final of the biggest tournament in the world again. pic.twitter.com/CL2T8ysF36
